Standard: Determine
two or more central ideas in a text and analyze their development over the
course of the text; provide an objective summary of the text. (7RI.2)
Objective (Explicit):
The students will determine two or more central ideas in a text and interpret their
development over the course of the text.
Evidence of Mastery (Measurable): Include a copy of the lesson assessment.
Provide exemplar student responses with the level of detail you expect to see.
Formative Assessment- The students will participate in group discussion, successfully able to
identify themes and track their progression throughout the work. Responses will be measured
on a scale of 1-4 based on the quality of their answers. Mastery will be considered a 3 response
or higher.
1- A theme is identified, but not explained.
2- Student can identify a theme, but has difficulty explaining it.
3- Student can identify and explain a theme, and discuss how it develops throughout the text in
broad terms
4- Student can identify and explain a theme, and discuss how it develops using examples from
the text.
Sub-objectives, SWBAT (Sequenced from basic to complex):
How will you review past learning and make connections to previous lessons?
What skills and content are needed to ultimately master this lesson objective?
How is this objective relevant to students, their lives, and/or the real world?
Teacher Will:
Student Will:
How will model your performance expectations? Remember, you are not modeling what you want students to discover but
need to model expected behavior or required procedures.
How will students take the lead and actively use materials to discover information that will help them answer the question
posed in Engage?
What questions or prompts will you be prepared to use with students while they are exploring?
Teacher Will:
Teacher will put students into group and ask them to
come up with two or more central themes in a work.
Teacher will then ask students to discuss how the
themes progress throughout the course of the work.
Student Will:
Co-Teaching Strategy
Differentiation Strategy
Students will be placed strategically into groups with students of different reading levels, so that they are able to
benefit from helping each other.
Explain
How will all students have an opportunity to share what they discovered?
How will you connect student discoveries to correct content terms/explanations?
How will all students articulate/demonstrate a clear and correct understanding of the sub-objectives by answering the
question from Engage before moving on?
Teacher Will:
Student Will:
Differentiation Strategy
If groups are struggling to come up with how the theme has developed, the teacher will ask probing questions
to guide their thinking about the text.
Elaborate
How will students take the learning from Explore and Explain and apply it to a new circumstance or explore a particular
aspect of this learning at a deep level?
How will students use higher order thinking at this stage? (e.g. A common practice in this section is to pose a what If
question)
How will all students articulate how their understanding has changed or been solidified?
Teacher Will:
Student Will:
Student will do their best to discuss how the
theme is significant to the work as a whole.
Differentiation Strategy
Teacher will ask guiding questions in order to help struggling students think about answers.
Evaluate
How will all students demonstrate mastery of the lesson objective (though perhaps not mastery of the Elaborate content)?
How will students have an opportunity to summarize the big concepts they learned (separate from the assessment)?
Teacher Will:
Student Will:
Student will take out a piece of paper and write
a paragraph, discussing a theme as it
progresses through the novel, using specific
evidence from the text.
Co-Teaching Strategy
Differentiation Strategy
Students with lower writing competency will be assessed based on their ideas and use of text evidence, as
opposed to the quality of their writing.
