Standard 3: Learning Environments
The teacher works with others to create environments that support individual and
collaborative learning, and that encourage positive social interaction, active engagement and
learning, and self motivation.
Artifact: Classroom Management Plan and Layout

Rationale Statement:
The artifact I am reflecting upon in this rationale contains my proposed classroom layout
and my Classroom Management Plan. My Classroom Layout plan reflects what I hope my future
High School history classroom to look like. I was able to use my personal experience in multiple
classroom settings during my educational career and my current clinical practice to shape both of
these. This artifact specifically connects to Essential Knowledge 3.1. This states that the teacher
understands how to "design learning experiences using strategies that build learner self
direction and ownership of learning" As a high school teacher I will design projects and
assignments that require students to be responsible as well as making sure they adhere to my
Classroom Management Policy which holds every student responsible.
The Classroom Management Policy was tougher to create than I anticipated. I learned
that I need to find a balance between being "strict" and "fun." I have creative ideas and plan to
use differentiated instruction in my classroom, but I realize that is not part of my management
plan. It is for that reason the "fun" information about my class had to be omitted from this
artifact. I had to stick to the rules that will run my class. I learned how to phrase things in a strict
yet positive way. I also realized how technology plays a role in student behavior now. I had to
specifically come up with a cell phone policy in relation to cheating and one that stood alone. I
also learned what was important to me. In high school my favorite teachers were the ones that

prepared me for my higher education and created a safe learning environment. They did this
through treating their students like adults and cultivating mutual respect among students.
I can use my classroom layout as a template for designing my personal classroom one
day. I hope to create a welcoming, inspirational, and intellectual environment. My classroom
management plan took a lot of reworking already and I know that I will continue to rework it. I
am sure I will change my mind or take on new principles that will affect how I manage my
classroom. As a pre professional, I can keep in mind my management plan and see how certain
aspects of it are implemented in the various classrooms I observe. As a professional one day I
can use this as a basis for creating a plan and to remind myself what is important to me.
