Instructional Objective (Lesson Objective*)


After an interactive lesson about the differences between common and proper nouns,
students will be able identify the difference between common and proper nouns by
completing the handout Noun Scavenger Hunt with 100% accuracy.

Demonstrate command of the conventions of Standard English grammar and usage when
writing or speaking; use common, proper, and possessive nouns

Indicators
This will be evident when students learn what is considered to be a common and proper
noun.

Schoolhouse Rock Noun Video


PowerPoint- common and proper nouns
Common and Proper Nouns notes handouts
Color Nouns Handout
Presto Chango Handout (corresponding word bank handout for average students)
Which one is the Common and Proper Noun handout
Noun Scavenger Hunt handout
Sweet Shop Sorting handout

Strategies (Learning Strategies*)


Group Discussion: This will be evident after the students complete the Do Now. The
teacher will discuss the answers the students chose.
Teacher Demonstration: The teacher will provide the proper information for the students
to help them understand the difference between common and proper nouns.
Cooperative Learning: This will be evident when students are in groups completing the
handouts to help them understand common nouns and proper nouns.

Motivation
The students will watch School House Rock Noun Video.

Developmental Procedures

Students will be seated and the teacher will call them up table-by-table to write on
the papers taped on the board a person, place, or thing. While the students are
waiting to go up to the board, they should be thinking of a person, place, or thing.
Then after student has a chance to come up to the board, the teacher then will go
over it.

Students will be given their appropriate handouts in regards to their


impairments and differentiation of instruction.

Students will view a PowerPoint about common nouns and they will be
provided a fill in the blank handout to follow along with. (Can you think of
examples of a common noun?)

Students will then complete the Color Nouns handout with their table
members. This will be discussed after completed.

Students will view a PowerPoint about proper nouns and fill in the blanks

on their handout as the teacher goes along. (Can you think of examples of proper
nouns?)

The students will then work their table members again to complete the
Presto Change Proper Nouns handout. This will be discussed after completed.

The Students will then be provided with a handout called Noun


Scavenger Hunt. This should be done individually and the students must walk
around the room, find nouns, and fill in the handout. This will be discussed once
completed.

The teacher will hand out the Sweet Shop Sorting Handout and will
completed for homework.

Adaptations (Exceptionality*)
Hearing Impairment- Students will be seated closer to the teacher to read lips.
Visual Impairment- Students will be seated closer to the board and handouts will have
larger fonts.
Grapho-Moto Skills- Students will receive handouts with blanks filled in.
English Language Learners- Students will receive a handout with vocabulary in their
native language and in English.

Differentiation of Instruction
Struggling Students: Students will have some of the blanks on the handouts already
completed.
Average Students: Students will receive a word bank of common and proper nouns for
the Presto Chango handout.

Advanced Students: Students will receive the handouts with empty blanks.

Assessment
Following the lesson on nouns, students will complete the handout titled Noun
Scavenger Hunt with 100% accuracy.

Independent Practice
For homework, students will complete the handout Sweet Shop Sorting.

Follow-Up Direct Teacher Intervention and Academic Enrichment


Direct Teacher Intervention: The teacher and the student, together, will complete a
handout explaining the difference between Common and Proper Nouns. The student will
have a word list consisting of different Common and Proper Nouns.

Academic Enrichment: The student will use the computer to play a common and proper
noun game on www.gameclassroom.com.
