Herbert Hoover &

Administration
Policies
Kameron Grant and Tiffany Harrend

Becoming President...
Herbert Hoover was born in Iowa, but grew
up in Oregon.
He went to Stanford University and
graduated as a mining engineer.
He was appointed Head of Wartime Food
Administration in 1917.
He began to look like a good presidential
candidate during the 1920s.
He was a Commerce Secretary, who

The Stock Market Crash...

The Stock Market crashed less than
eight months into Hoovers presidency.
He tried to reverse the crash.
He focused on the crisis as a whole.
Refused to involve the government with
controlling businesses and
manipulating the value of the
currency.

What Hoover tried to do...

President Hoover saw the Stock Market Crash as a problem that was inflicted
on the nation as a whole.
In some ways he was right in his thinking, but it was the individual citizens that
were suffering the most.

Hoover refused to pay relief to these individuals

He tried to help each state individually to help the unemployed.
He tried to raise money through volunteering, that would go to the employers.
He had the federal government focus more on agriculture, and made the
industry more stable.
He also tried to start more public works projects, to get unemployed people

What really happened...

These actions did not play out how
Hoover expected.
Businesses did not have enough money
to pay all their employees fairly, so
they had to start laying people off,
increasing the amount of unemployed
people.
The increased rate of unemployment, as
well as the lack of relief being paid to
individuals, lost Hoover the
appreciation of the public.

How the nation reacted...

Everyone blamed Hoover for the
Great depression.
They say Hoover was cruel and
selfish, because he wouldnt lay
relief to individuals.
Some of his followers tried his
volunteering ideas but not many.

Franklin D. Roosevelt and The New Deal...

In 1932, Herbert Hoover lost the election
to Franklin Delano Roosevelt.
Roosevelt would act based off of what
Hoover did when he was in office.
Only this time, Roosevelt would rely less
on volunteering, etc., and more on
direct relief, and government control
over businesses and industries.
These acts would be known as The New
Deal.

The connection to John Steinbeck...

John Steinbeck was in his late twenties
when the Great Depression hit.
There was a huge influence on his life,
which motivated him and other authors in
a time of need.
Of Mice and Men was set while America
was still recovering, and that in part, is
why it is such a powerful novel.
