HDF 190: FLITE (FIRST-YEAR LEADERS INSPIRED TO EXCELLENCE)

URI MINOR IN LEADERSHIP STUDIES, CENTER FOR STUDENT LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT

CORE REQUIREMENT FOR THE LEADERSHIP MINOR
SPRING 2016

SERVICE LEARNING & LEADERSHIP CONTRACT DRAFT

Goal: To identify and utilize my Strengths (Gallup Talents/StrengthsQuest and/or VIA
Character Strengths) in an organizational/interpersonal setting that aligns with the
mission, vision, values and sponsored programs and activities of URIs Center for
Student Leadership Development. In order to accomplish this goal, I attended the
Welcome Day as a Leadership Ambassador for incoming first year students on October
11th and 25th, 2015.
Activity: I participate in the University of Rhode Islands Welcome Day Fall 2015 as a
Leadership Ambassador.
Annotation: My strengths of adaptability, communication, humor, kindness, and social
intelligence will allow me to learn and gain experience from them by becoming a
leadership ambassador. Adaptability will allow me to have the confidence in any
situation whereas my knowledge about the Leadership Studies minor and the Leadership
Institute would be put to the test. Social intelligence will allow me to be aware of the
motives/feelings of others and myself to create an environment that has an aura of
friendliness and honestly.
At the end of what felt like a successful Welcome Day I had no regrets on what I
said. Even though it was a long event of constantly talking to incoming first year students
and their families (most situations I had a partner who took the parents aside while I
spoke to the teenagers) it was a great, successful learning experience. It was a successful
learning experience because I was able to motivate and persuade incoming first year
students about the many short term benefits of the institute and to help the students

visualize the advantage that having this minor under their belts will place them in the
beyond the four years here at URI. Adaptability along with social intelligence was
constantly working to not only go with the flow in any situation but to relate to the
students or to the parents about the importance and uniqueness of this minor throughout
their lives. My confidence came out when the experiences I went through shaped me to
have the ability to be at where I am today. The different ways to handle different types of
people in different situations was a main theme I learned as being a Leadership
Ambassador.
Evidence: Some of the evidence I have from my experience as a Leadership Ambassador
is my nametag and a Lead Big pen from the Leadership Studies booth I wore in my
pocket protector.
