Date: 4/25/16 Period/Time: Pd. 8 2:21-3:10 Grade: 6th Grade ICS Writing Subject/Topic/Activity: Video Poem Project Standards: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.6.10 Range of Reading and Level of Text Complexity By the end of the year, read and comprehend literature, including, stories, dramas, and poems, in the grades 6-8 text complexity band proficiently, with scaffolding as needed at the high end of the range. Objectives: Students will be able to create a Video Poem Project after reading and comprehending various poems. Materials: Poetry Books BYOD Rubric Projector Procedures: Introduction: Students will come in and their do-now will be on the board. They will have to read the poetry word of the day. We will quickly go through the word, and what it means. After, they will read the poem in the basket and wait for further instruction. Body: The students will be starting a Video Poem Project that takes place over a weeklong span. They will be given a rubric that lists what they are required to do. They are required to find a poem (in different poetry books) between 15-20 lines. Their video should be between 1 to 2 minutes long, and consist of 12-15 images to represent their poem. They can use any platform of their choice to create the video, but www.photopeach.com was recommended to all students. I will model for the students what a Video Poem Project should look like, with one that I created. This project will correspond with the poem that they read as a do-now. After the video, we will have an open discussion about what version of this poem was more appealing to
them; written or video. The students will be able to then partner up
and wait for further instruction. Once all students have a partner, I will call them one table at a time, and allow one partner to come and select a book that they can look through. The students were told ahead atime that it was a BYOD so if they have their own device, they are allowed to use that to look up various poems. There will be a few recommended websites for the students to use on the board, to guide them along. Together the students will begin looking through various poem books or online to select a poem that fits the criteria. Once the students have selected a poem, they will have a worksheet that they can use to brainstorm what they are going to put in their video. Closing: At the end of the period, if time permits, I will give the students some sort of self-regulation worksheet to reflect on their progress. They are to write their goal for the week, and then independently write one or two ways they are going to reach their goals. This will be handed to me on the way out of the door. Assessment: Students will be observed throughout the lesson in a few ways. My cooperating teacher(s) and myself will be circulating around the room to ensure the students are on task, and reaching the objective. Along with that, the students will have a self-regulation reflection sheet that I will be collecting at the end of the period. This reflection sheet can be completed over the course of a three-day period. At the end of the project, the students will be handing in their rubric and presentation. Their presentation will be graded out of 25 points. Management Issues, Transitions, and Differentiation: The students will be working in partners to complete the project. This appeals to students that may struggle, and prefer to work in a group rather than independently. The students will be given very clear and direct instructions to ensure that they will be on task. They will also not be given any materials until all directions have been given. The students will transition from one part of the lesson to the other by teacher instruction. The students will be given a rubric, and a brainstorming guideline, to show them what is expected of them. Along with that, the students will be given an appropriate platform to use so that they are not struggling to find one on their own. This project allows the students to use their creativity and imagination in order to analyze their selected poem.
