Verbs
Define lexical/main verb: The primary verb in a verb phrase. Has more than a grammatical meaning.
Define helping/auxiliary verb: A verb which serves a purely grammatical purpose. Cannot be the only verb in a
verb phrase.
Define action verb: A verb which describes something that happens.
Define linking/state of being verb: A verb which links the subject with its complement. An equals sign in
the middle of a sentence.
Define transitive verb and give a few examples: A verb which takes an object. Ex. Throw, destroy, praise
Define intransitive verb and give a few examples: A verb which does not take an object. Ex. Run, step, pirouette
Identify the following sentences as either active or passive voice, and rewrite them in their opposite form. If a
sentence in passive voice lacks what will become the subject when the sentence is changed to active voice,
make one up!
