HDF 190: FLITE (FIRST-YEAR LEADERS INSPIRED TO EXCELLENCE)
URI MINOR IN LEADERSHIP STUDIES, CENTER FOR STUDENT LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT
CORE REQUIREMENT FOR THE LEADERSHIP MINOR SPRING 2016
SERVICE LEARNING & LEADERSHIP CONTRACT DRAFT
Goal: To identify and utilize my Strengths (Gallup Talents/StrengthsQuest and/or VIA Character Strengths) in an organizational/interpersonal setting that aligns with the mission, vision, values and sponsored programs and activities of URIs Center for Student Leadership Development. See Inventory document and/or web.uri.edu/leadership for these details. Activity: For my learning contract I decided to participate in a facilitator training at the north woods challenge course. While I was there I learned how I would facilitate many different activities with the groups that visited and then debrief the activities with the group. Throughout the whole training I saw opportunities to apply my strengths and values. My top VIA strength of humor could be applied almost everywhere on the challenge course. Though some things on the challenge course need to be taken very seriously like safety, it is okay and was even encourage to crack a joke every once and a while. Having my Gallup Value of analytical also was very helpful because each group that is brought to the challenge course is different and a facilitator needs to be able to determine how high functioning a group is to see which activities they should and shouldnt do. My value of analytical was also very helpful when debriefing an activity. A facilitator must be able to notice and bring up problems that the group may be having. This could singling someone out for something they have done butt asking a more general question of the group like Did everyone feel like they were able to participate?.
This type of question allows a person who felt left out to step forward and speak their mind on how included they felt.
