Stakeholder Analysis
Personally I have witnessed many overweight children while doing everyday activities
throughout the week such as taking trips to the supermarket or volunteering at the boys and girls
club. Statistics recorded during the year 2010, confirmed that an estimated 34.4% of U.S children
and teens are overweight and 17.1% are obese. Many may not see the problematic concerns to
the childhood obesity epidemic; nevertheless when one is obese as a child, the likelihood of one
being an obese adult is increased. Health problems that are associated with childhood obesity
such as cardiovascular diseases will track these children into adulthood, and if the current obesity
epidemic is not reversed the current generation of children may be the first to have a shorter life
expectancy than their parents.
It is unfortunate that over decades, childhood obesity has been a problem in our society
however records have not seen the slightest of decrease yet. Particularly I am concerned on why
such a horrific issue is not being addressed with more effort and determination. According to a
recent study 44% of physical education classes and recess are being cut out of minority schools
curriculum to concentrate more on reading and mathematics. Granted that the epidemic of
childhood obesity is increasing, simply cutting out physical activity in minority schools will have
a plethora of negative impacts. Of course keeping physical activity in school will not eliminate

childhood obesity solely but in fact much research has shown that physical education help
prevents childhood obesity and is a result in a reduction in BMI percentile in school children.
In concern to physical inactivity in minority school, Im ensured that many school-based
intervention programs and associations that set the requirements of physical education in school
such as the National Association for Sport and Physical Education are aware of the now ongoing
issue of budget cuts on physical education; nevertheless, the beneficial aspect of physical
education is overestimated by stakeholders that have the power to make a difference. It is
important for stakeholders that are involved in childhood obesity and physical education such as
parents, doctors and the school board to be aware of the crisis for they all have an ability to make
a difference. Researchers have noted that few parents are associated with in-school physical
activity support. It is concerning that parents are not in full throttle of action to prevent physical
activity from being cut out their children schools, for it only benefits children mental and
physical health, personality, and communication skills. Parents are potential stakeholders
because if they were to read and take account of the issues I am proposing in my research,
parents can succeed into making differences that can help their children as well as children
around the U.S. Parents that are a part of the PTA can take action by addressing issues, concerns
and suggestions of a reformed program in meetings that can eventually be brought upon to the
head school board.
Doctors are also stakeholders that are involved with my research, because my findings
will be beneficial for them to take account on how to prevent childhood obesity epidemic steady
increase. It is evident that physical activity participation in minority school, benefits children and
can cause reduction in their BMI percentile in all genders, race/ethnicities, and class status. With
such information doctors will have another source to the childhood obesity epidemic research;

with a personal notation from a doctor that specializes in childhood obesity, stating that physical
activity in minority school plays a significant role in decreasing obesity in children will not only
open parents eyes but states school districts and boards as well. Granted that doctors would be
interested in my proposal and concerns I believe that they do not have as much power to make a
difference in the schools curriculum compared to parents and a school board. However I do
think with their support and personally opinion of the situation doctors can convince more
dominant stakeholders that a change must occur. Ultimately out of the stakeholder Ive identified
to be most interested in my research findings, school boards would be the most influential
stakeholders that can truly ease my concerns.
The National School Board Association (NSBA) represents more than 90,000 local
school boards member that advocate excellences, equality, and leadership in public education.
NSBA is the primary association that interacts with multiple state school boards around the
country. The National School Board Association is the most important stakeholder involved with
my research proposal, because not only is this association starting the concern of increase child
obesity by taking out physical activity in school but also have the power to bring back and
reform the physical education program so it can be better than ever. I am aware that physical
education is eliminating due to budget cuts, however, I believe that with enough effort and
willingness to make a difference to benefit childrens well-being, an answer can be determined.
Researchers argued that PEs roots lie in health promotion and that the field has been sidetracked
for decades from its core mission. Therefore my assumption that physical education is being
taken out of schools curriculum is not solely on budget cuts, yet the lack of interest, support and
respect for the core purpose of the class is not present. Physical education is to provide
motivation to a lifetime application of an active and healthy lifestyle to our youth and promote

relevance in sport skills and wellness. If I wish to reach the National School Board Association
to address my concerns and opinions I will have to succeed in convincing them that physical
education cut backs is indeed will only add on to the childhood epidemic and evidently physical
education have positive results in helping the decrease of the childhood obesity epidemic.
Genre Analysis
Now that I have identified my prime stakeholder for my research proposal I now must
strategize on how to introduce my findings to such a dominant association like NSBA.
Considering that the National School Board Association is made up of hundreds, if not thousands
of authorities around the United States and Canada my approach to them may take years to
perform. Also to keep in mind, I am just a freshman in college with no authority to my name, so
having these individuals from this group hearing my proposal will be a slim to none chance of
happening instantly. This is where strategic planning must take place in order to get the outcome
I am looking for. I assume that the National School Board Association receive multiple emails
and letters addressed to them daily, simply performing this type of approach will not do any
justice in my favor , my letter will hold no authority and is not significantly differentiated from
the others. Nevertheless, I believe a direct face to face approach with the NSBA would be a more
appropriate approach anyhow for this discourse community because their primary genres are
multiple forms of in person gatherings. The National School Board Association holds multiple
seminars, meetings, conferences, and webinars weekly. In these gatherings public education
issues are discussed between local school board officials; issues that may be discussed include
finance, LGBT students, facility and various others. Furthermore, addressing my topic in this
type of genre will be most prominent. Yet, these gatherings are organized by the NSBA are held
in a prestige manner where only authorities involved within a school board is allowed to attend,

therefore it is essential for me to reach out to sponsors. The purpose of reaching out to sponsor
such as other major organizations and groups involved in my topic can help my proposal,
concerns and motives to be heard regarding physical education classes in minority schools by the
NSBA. With the help of other organization my approach would be more noticeable to the NSBA
and also will benefit my proposal with extra knowledge and sources. The first most appropriate
action to planning my direct approach to my dominant stakeholder is to find allies for my
proposal. I must reach out to organizations that are willing to help and have the same
determination as me to convince the NSBA the importance of physical education classes in
minority schools.
Searching for local organization that have motives of bettering public education was
quite a challenge. I simply try to narrow down my search for organizations or clubs that are
extremely close to me; what better place to find organizations than located at college. University
of Central Florida has hundreds of student organizations and clubs that approaches various issues
around the world, so it can be safely assumed that an organization that promotes well-being in
children through public education can be found. Browsing through multiple clubs and
organizations, I have come across an organization called Children Beyond our Borders.
Children Beyond our Borders focuses on giving opportunities of a proper education for all
children no matter race/ethnicity, gender, or social statuses. With an organization such as
Children Beyond our Borders that is concerned for the youth, my proposal may intrigue them
in such matter. Luckily this organizations have meetings open to the student population and I will
be able to personally attend with my research proposal. Hoping that they will allow me to present
my findings, my research will soon captivate the audience with awe. After addressing my
research I anticipate that Children Beyond our Borders are willing to join in with my direct

approach to the NSBA. Also I hope to benefit with further knowledge, personal opinions, and an
introductions to other alike organizations by making alliance with Children Beyond our
Borders. Nevertheless assuming that Children Beyond our Borders will agree with helping
me with my direct approach, a student organization will not completely do the job with
approaching the NSBA. Children Beyond our Borders is influential addition to my conquest
nevertheless, I need another organization that is willing to help and has more power to their
name.
No other group will benefit me the most and will give me the furthermost likely chance
of addressing my proposal directly to the NSBA then local schools and school boards in Orlando.
With backing support by at least one of these organizations, it will be more likely for my
proposal to be directly approached to the National School Board Association because these
members a part of such organizations are invited to the various gatherings organized by my
dominant stakeholder. There is over ten secondary schools near University of Central Florida;
contacting the principal, PTA staff, or other consultants from these local schools and boards with
my initial proposal will hopefully convince them to be a part of my final presentation to the
NSBA. To enlist these members from local schools and boards as my allies I must first capture
their attention. Ill reach out to them by writing personal letters highlighting my feelings and
apprehensions towards budgets cuts of physical education in schools. I will then explain several
key findings in my research that stress why keeping physical education in schools is an essential
attribute for childrens mental as well as physical health. Additionally, its evident that physical
education classes help reduce minority children BMI percentile. In my personal letter I will also
include personal options and apprehensions from my other future ally Children Beyond our
Borders. With such information presented in my personal letter to the authorities of local

schools and boards, I hope to have an interest from them and a request to hear more of my initial
proposal. Ultimately I hope to come face to face with the principals, PTA or other consultants a
part of the local schools and boards, recruiting them to be an official sponsor for my cause. Their
input and opinions on how they also believe that the purpose of the physical education is
overestimated by the NSBA will be an invaluable contribution to my final presentation. With
such allies, the NSBA will be more infatuated with my research; my research will be
recognizable with backup options by organizations that the National School Board Association
hears out the most. To be able to secure my ideal allies it is ensured that the NSBA will be
notified with my initial proposal for many of their decision making is based on feedback by
parents, the media, school boards, and local organizations.
Aforementioned steps I plan to achieve to further my final presentation to the National
School Board Association will not take only a few weeks. Im prepared to be patient with my
ideal allies with their feedback and willingness to commit to my project I have decided to do.
Nevertheless I have no doubt that I will get supporters because the organizations Im targeting
also have the same desire and drive to better youth public education. Once that I have created a
team and incorporate all extra knowledge I have collect from my allies within my previous
research, I will hope that my final presentation will take place. The most beneficial aspect by
making alliance with the local schools and boards officials is that they can be a voice for my
research for they are allowed to attend the NSBA organized gatherings. Nevertheless I will
prepare my own final presentation but discuss with my allies to see how the direct approach will
go about. Considering that the meetings, conferences and other gatherings held with over a
thousand school board officials my presentation must be prepared with precision, neatness, and
appeal to the audiences eye. After exploring many options, I concluded that my final

presentation formed as a Prezi will be best. I will begin with quoting childhood obesity current
statistics as well as future statistics if the childhood obesity epidemic is not reversed. Then I will
state several benefits of physical education in minority school that I have collect in my research.
Furthermore, I will correlate the two topic by discussing studies that conducted positive numbers
on how physical activity in children benefit their health and health as an adult. I will also state
other benefits physical education have and how keeping the program can benefit the school
board. It is evidently proven that physical education classes play a role in better performance in
students test scores. Not only benefiting the children but also the school itself, it is more likely
that my stakeholder will come to reconciliation. Following my research portion of my final
presentation, Ill then pose the question, why are P.E classes taken out of minority schools
curriculum? Acknowledge the fact that P.E classes are being cut due to budget I will argue that
with desire and determination of a reform program a solution can be made, and lack of support is
present. Completely cutting out physical activity in schools will only harm our child in the long
run; I plan to play the devils advocate to provoke my audience with guilt and pathos.
I always believed that physical education is important to keep in our youths curriculum
and I hope my passion for this topic will translate to my stakeholder and an agreement of a
change will be determined.
