While reading The Coming Race I had a sudden revelation that perhaps the society we
live in is not the greatest and that perhaps there may be a superior one that we may be able to
acquire and successfully live by. This revelation was caused by the fictional story itself where a
Miner and his friend in an undisclosed location discovers a city deep beneath the earths crest.
This city contained a civilization not like any known to man kind. This civilization had rules
similar to our own, however there were a few major differences regarding our way of lives, laws,
and even appearances.

First and foremost, these beings resembled godlike/angel creatures you only hear about in
Mythology, they had wings resembling those of angels and facial structures similar to that of the
Sphinx which is located in Egypt. Their skin color was of a red hue, they were even far taller
then the average man that reside in our own civilizations above ground. Also, their language is of
none known to man, it is ancient. Regarding their laws, this civilization simply did not permit
praise into their daily lives, in fact it was abolished throughout their entire government. This
society of theirs does not involve/express feelings and remarks of appraisal to those who stride
and make fantastic feats that greatly contribute to their own civilization. These feats include but
are not limited too; artistic abilities and mechanical inventions. They abolished this praise due to
the fear that it would create/promote evil passions, thus causing vicious actions/attacks towards
others, possibly due to jealousy and or un-acceptance from their peers. Those who did not accept
this type of system either left this society willingly or were removed by the government by force.
There are many other towns/cities/societies that are beneath the ground however none are great
and are in fact doomed.

Regarding my own revelation I acquired through this reading, prior to reading The
Coming Race I simply did not believe that there could be any type of civilization/society that
would be able to become successful without any time of appraisal. Compared to life now we
don't often stride for great feats unless there is some sort of reward at the end if we do achieve
the goal we set for ourselves or someone set for us. We simply need motivation to thrive or even
produce new creations that would be useful to not only you and I but to our entire society.
However in this civilization the the minors discovered, the residents did not ask or even expect
praise whenever they created something either artistic or scientific (invention). Would one
assume that without praise their civilization would not be able to advance, however this is proven
incorrect. Through the reading the miner discovers/notices many mechanical invention that do
not exist in our lives above ground. They had robots and flying ships, scientific advances far
beyond the ones we have acquired in our own lives. Not only has this but their society contains
little to no violent attacks from within their own society. This proves that a civilization can in
fact thrive (at least for them) without praise to one another. However, would this type of society
be able to withstand and be efficient in our own lives above ground?

Although I do believe this type of society is far greater then our own and wish that we
can live like that in order to completely eradicate violent actions in our lives, through further
research I came to the conclusion that this type of society would not be efficient. If we were to
create a society based on the one the miner discovered it would not be successful. I believe that a
society/civilization specifically built by and for humans requires appraisal to be efficient, this is
because it is in our nature crave praise. This is proven through The rule of Esteem where it
defines that all humans need and want praise, recognition, and even acceptance. Being showed

gratitude and appraisal leads to happiness in our lives, without these we would not be able to
function as a society. As I said before, although the society and civilization that the miner
discovered beneath the Earths crest is far superior then our own, there is simply no way for all of
human kind to adapt to that way of life. This is only because it is in our nature to acquire praise,
recognition, and acceptance from our peers. Without that in our lives we would live
dysfunctional and doomed society that would crumble very rapidly.
