Release
of
Responsib
ility

When you learned to ride a

bike there were several stages
to your acquisition of the skill.
First you watched someone
else ride a bike. You saw the
free they had and the fun they
were having. You wanted the
same for yourself. Next, you
got on the bike and if you were
lucky a caring adult held on to
the seat and the bars to make
sure you didnt fall. You placed
your feet on the pedals and
started to move. Balance might
have been an issue but you
quickly compensated until the
adult released you gently in to
the wild world of bicycle
freedom! This is the gradual
release of responsibility.

information and inspire action
with staff. The topic of our
meetings can be chosen for us,
but the delivery method is up to
our discretion. Chalk and talk
sessions with staff or lectures
are largely ineffective.
Motivating our team is part of
our duty as an effective leader.
Therefore designing workshops
involves planning and out of
the box thinking.

Scenarios

Next, you can choose a

scenario. Choose between
corporate or educational.
These leaders had a difficult
time with their workshops.

Slide has two choices.

Scenario
1

Principal is discussing
Differentiating Instruction
for students. She stands at
the front of the room and
shows slides of the
definitions of Content,
Process, Product and
Environment. She opens
the floor for discussion of
the topic. It quickly
deteriorates in to
naysaying behavior that
gets out of control. The
union representative gets
involved talking about the
limitations of Principals
control. In the end, the
Principal requires the entire
staff to turn in a lesson
plan that illustrates how
the subject areas are
already doing it. This
deliverable is something
that gets handled by a new
teacher from each subject
area or the department
leader. The example will be
a simple check off the list
of responsibilities and no
true change will have
occurred. What do you

differently?

Scenario
2

Mary has the responsibility of

rolling out a new policy
document to her staff. She
gave them the document at the
beginning of the meeting and
gave her staff five minutes to
read it. Next, she asked, Are
there any questions? The
room was silent. Her staff
sighed and many raised their
eyebrows to see the new
changes to the policy. Mary,
handed out paper and asked
her staff to record any
questions for later.

Use the scenario to fill out the
chart. What could have been
done differently? How could the
leader change their workshop
to help motivate staff to positive
learning and action?

so, how has it changed?

In this session, you learned
about the gradual release
of responsibility as it
pertains to workshops with
staff. Refer back to your
