The purpose of confidence interval is to help us determine a range of values for an

estimated true value of a population parameter. With confidence interval we can

calculate where an estimated population parameter is locate.

Construct a 99% confidence interval for the true proportion of yellow

candies.

At 99% confidence, the true proportion of yellow skittles is between (.159 and .210).
We are 99% confident that the population proportion will be between the previously
stated values.

Construct a 95% confidence interval estimate for the true mean of candies
per bag.

At 95% confidence, the true mean number of candies per bag is between (58.23 <
< 60.37). We are 95% confident that the true mean number of candies per bag will
be between the previously stated numbers.

Construct a 98% confidence interval estimate for the standard deviation of

the number of candies per bag.

At 98% confidence, the true standard deviation is between (2.05 <

< 3.96).

We are 98% confident that the true standard deviation of number of candies per
bag will be between the previously stated numbers.

The purpose of hypothesis testing is to take sample data to determine is a

hypothesis of a population is true. We can determine if the data for the sample is
valid for the population. This will help us decide if we can accept or decline the null
hypothesis based on the previously determined level of significance.
Use a 0.05 significance level to test the claim that 20% of all skittles
candies are red.
Ho: P = .20
Hi: P .20
P hat = 360/1601 = .22486
STAT, TEST, 1-PropZTest, P=.20, X=360, n=1601, P

.20,

Calculate
Z=2.487

P-value=.0128

Since P-value=0.128 is smaller than significance level (.05). We reject the null
hypothesis. There is sufficient evidence to warrant rejection of the claim that 20%
of candies are red.

Use a 0.01 significant level to test the claim that the mean number of
cadies in a bag of skittles is 55.
Ho: = 55

Hi:

55

S = 2.71
n = 27
STAT, TEST, T-test,

= 55, X=59.3, S=2.71, n=27, 55, Calculate

T = 8.245

P-value = 0

Since P-value is 0 and less than the significant level of .01. We reject the null
hypothesis. There is sufficient evidence to reject the claim that the mean number
of candies per bag is 55.

Errors could have been made by not carefully considering the requirements for
using this data. In addition using the wrong critical values could interfere with the
right solution when doing the calculations. I think this research was simple but we
were able to apply different principles learned in class with the same data. By
having doing this project we were not only able to learn the material presented in
class, but we were also able to test it with raw data that we all collected as a class.
