Dakota State University

College of Education
LESSON PLAN FORMAT
Name: Erin Rabenberg
Grade Level: 2nd
School: Chester Elementary
Date: April 4th, 2016
Time: 2:00-2:30
Reflection from prior lesson: There was not enough time in the class to do all of the activities. The students
enjoyed and were more willing to participate in the circle hoop pass and group juggling than crossing the great
divide. Tying the students legs together with a bandana like in a three legged race would have made this activity
easy and the students would have understood what the purpose of the activity was which was working together to
walk across the gym.
South Dakota Physical Education Content Standards Addressed:
Standard 2: The physically literate individual applies knowledge of concepts, principles, strategies and
tactics to enhance movement and performance.

Contextual Factors/ Learner Characteristics: The second grade is one of two grades in the elementary that is split
into two sections. In the section that meets from 2:00-2:30 Monday, Wednesday, and every other Friday there are 19
students. There are 7 males and 12 females. All students in the class are Caucasian. The class is a skilled group of
students who enjoy physical activity and competing. The students start each class by running 3-5 laps, depending of
the number the teacher gives them at the door, and then they sit in the center circle until everyone has finished. The
students sit until the teacher instructs them as to what to do next. If the weather is good enough the class will go
outside for the activity.

The Lesson
1. Introduction (5 min)
Getting attention
Relating to past experience and/or knowledge
Creating a need to know

Sharing objective, in general terms

Students will take a multiple choice pre assessment.
The teacher will ask the students questions.
What does cooperation mean?
How does a good teammate act?
How can you be a good teammate?
Why is it important to be a good teammate?
Today we are going to do activities where you are going to need to be a good teammate and cooperate, listen,
and encourage each other.

2. Content Delivery (include time allotment & instructional methodologies)

The teacher will meet the students at the door and hold up three fingers for the students to run
three laps. When finished students will sit in the center circle. (3 min)
Activity 1 (5 min): Group Juggling: The class will stand in a circle. One student will start with
the ball and toss it to someone in the group (someone who is not standing next to them). This will
continue until everyone has touched the ball only once. They will then continue the pattern
throwing to the same person every time. Then I will add a 2nd and a 3rd ball.
Activity 2 (5 min): Circle Hoop Pass: The boys will be in one group and the girls in another.
Each group will stand in a circle and hold hands or hold a bean bag instead of touching hands.
Two students will join hands through a hula hoop. They have to move the hoop around the circle
to the starting position without letting go of each others hands. They will do this both directions
around the circle.
Activity 3 (5 min): Crossing the Great Divide: Students will find a partner. They will start on
one baseline and they are to keep their inside feet touching at all times and make it to the other
side of the gym. They will then do it in groups of 4 and then the entire class.
Activity 4 (5 min): 4 Corners: There will be five cones out 4 in a square and 1 in the center.
Each cone will have 4 students by it. When the teacher says go each group must move to one of
the cones that make up the square. There will be 5 teams trying to get to 4 cones. All 4 team
members must be at the same cone. The team that is out will go to the center cone.
3. Closure (2 min)
Teacher will yell, freeze and instruct 4 students to pick up the cones and the rest will line up at
the door.

Technology Integration:
Assessments Used: Questions and written multiple choice pre assessment will be given to students.
Differentiated Instruction: If students are struggling with one ball in the group juggling I will not add a second or
third ball.
