e just turned 25 years old. He

was wealthy and he was slowly
killing himself. Wes Melcher
had made his first million dollars
by then, but the way he was going,
he wasnt going to live to see 30.
Physically, spiritually and emotionally,
Wes was feeling pretty bankrupt.
Finally, a serious health scare in 2006 forced one of
WorldVentures own to seriously re-assess his life. Or
more accurately, his doctor re-assessed it for him.
All those years of not taking care of myself took their
toll, and the doctor said that for the sake of my heart,
I needed to make some changes, Wes recalls. He was
pretty firm and strict with me, and I started taking care
of myself.
I wasnt exercising, I wasnt going to church and
emotionally I was pretty unbalanced, Wes says. I was
go-go-go all the time, and I didnt give myself one
second to stop and smell the roses.
Given direct advice from his physician, Wes jumpstarted his life by changing almost everything about
it. He started going to the gym, reconnected with
church and learned how to connect emotionally with
people again.
His health scare, combined with the birth of his
daughter, Jianna, in 2010, completely turned his life

To walk blindly into the
unknown, armed with nothing
more than an idea, a goal and a
prayer? David Townsend could
tell you a little bit about taking
the road less traveled and, in the
end, defying all expectations.
A LEAP OF FAITH
At age 19, David was a broke college student living in
Denver with no special talent and no future to speak of.
I was in school because thats what I was supposed to
do if I wanted to be successful, he says. At least, thats
what everyone told me.
But David had an open mind and the desire to live a life
full of fun, freedom and fulfillment. Thats why when
he learned about WorldVentures, he saw a future for
himself, and he pursued it. It all started when he was
invited to a travel party. The WorldVentures approach
to life got the wheels in Davids brain turning, and he
was never the same.
I had wanted freedom from an early age, he says. I
was watching a lot of young people graduate and get

stuck in jobs they didnt love. That was crazy to me! I was not excited to
follow that path. So when I learned about WorldVentures, I saw a way out.
David was also excited about adopting a travel lifestyle. Travel had always
been his passion, and the idea that he might spend his life traveling the world
was a tempting prospect. I couldnt believe I could be my own boss and run
my own international business from my cell phone from any beach in the
world, he says. I decided then that this was for me. And I ran with it.

THE BEST THINGS IN LIFE

With no money, few prospects and little support, David was making, what
looked to many, a risky decision. Every one of his best friends said no to his
business pitch. People close to him didnt see the potential. But David felt a
spiritual pull to keep going.
All the best things in my life have come from decisions I made when I
felt the Lord guiding me, he shares. They might not have made any
logical sense but, then, neither does the success Ive had over the past
seven years.
The decision to join WorldVentures ended up shaping Davids entire life. He
didnt know how, or even why, but WorldVentures was where he belonged.
He took a leap of faith, and his life was never the same.

WITH MICHAEL JEX, IMD

/// BY ZAC GARVER

YOU NEVER KNOW

WHEN DESTINY
WILL CALL. FOR
MICHAEL JEX, IT
WAS 5:30 IN THE
MORNING.
Michael Jex watched
a WorldVentures
presentation for
three hours laptop propped open on his bed, bleary and
exhausted after a long night spent recording music at a local
studio. Seven months later, he hit Senior Rep. Seven months
after that, he hit Director. Then, something shifted. Just 23
months into his WorldVentures career, Michael vaulted
to International Marketing Director (IMD).

What made Michael say yes to WorldVentures? And

what sort of shift could propel him through the final
four ranks of WorldVentures so quickly?
For that, you have to start with a younger Michael
Jex, who grew up in East New York, Brooklyn, where
he wrestled with a future that held no promise and
offered little chance for escape.

MICHAEL &
FRANCHESCA
WITH THEIR

Michaels parents divorced when he was in junior high;

nonetheless, his relationships with them remained strong.

CHILDREN,
KHLOE & KOBE

Michael maintained decent grades until high school,

when newfound independence and the allure of the urban
lifestyle became too strong to resist.
He started hanging with the wrong crowd, skipping
school and walking a path of destruction. His passion for
music production was one of his few remaining guides,
and it proved to be a critical stepping stone to his
eventual success.
During this time, a voice in the back of Michaels mind
was telling him that his life could be, should be, different.
A greater purpose was calling his name. As a matter of
fact, the greater purpose eventually called his cell phone
and left a voicemail.
Despite his challenges in high school, Michael landed
a steady job working for the construction company
commissioned to build the transportation hub beneath
the World Trade Center Plaza in Lower Manhattan. Three
years later, the Port Authority canceled the contract due
to a budget dispute, and Michael was given two weeks
notice and his final paycheck. Hundreds of employees
were laid off virtually in an instant.

THAN ANYTHING ELSE.

michael

Michael made a promise to himself. I never

wanted to be in that situation again, where
I did nothing wrong and my finances were
taken from me because of something else,
another entity that I had no control over.
A year and a half later, a voicemail from a
friend came out of the blue. And changed
everything. Listening to it when he reached
home around 5:30 a.m., it went something
like this: Hey, Michael. Check this out. Ive
been working on something for a couple of
days, I think youre going to like it. Check out
my website and let me know what you think.
Intrigued, Michael popped open his laptop,
entered the web address and heard the voice
of Jefferson Santos.

He pressed play again. And again. Over and

over for three hours. Michael called Jefferson
back. A week later Jefferson took Michael to
meet Ed Blunt, and in that meeting, destiny
closed the deal on Michael Jex. He used his
unemployment check to pay the sign-up fees
and the game was on!

Michael spent much of the next six months

under Eds mentorship, and it was less about
the business and more about what was going
on in Michaels head.

I was more addicted to getting that

personal development and learning how to
become a better person, and believing that
would help me achieve financial success
more than anything else.
At 26 years old, with a young family to
support, Michael needed WorldVentures
to work, but rather than worrying about
the how, he focused on his personal
growth and let faith carry the load.
When you worry, you dont have any faith.
So I said, Im going to stop worrying and let
faith do some of the work this time.

rather than

MICHAEL

HIGHLY

Michaels success didnt come without costs. He spent

most of the initial two-and-a-half years selling the
product, building his team and missing out on being
with his daughter, Khloe, as a toddler.
That team is now filled with friends he grew up with
in Brooklyn, including Julio Acosta, Javed White, Jesus
Caratini, Gary Cowan and more. These are people
who Michael is helping achieve their own dreams.
Fortunately, hes reached a point where he has the
time and money freedom to be at home with his
children all day and still help his teammates build
successful businesses.

GAGED
HER
AN D AN

I N S P IR AT I ON T O

Was the sacrifice worth it? Michael insists it was not

just worth it, but necessary.
If you want an extraordinary life, you cant be
balanced. Everyone wants to be balanced. Guess what?
For at least a bare minimum of a year, you cant have
balance in your life, because the balance will only slow
you down. You have to create an imbalance. You have
to give your all to WorldVentures. Its about sacrificing
a few weekends of spending time with the kids, for a
year, to spend all day and all night with them forever.
Michael and Franchesca have a second child, Kobe,
who is 1 year old and, because of the imbalance he
created early on, Michael is now a highly engaged
father and an inspiration to hundreds of thousands of
WorldVentures Reps across the globe.
For Michael, winning isnt about beating the
competition; its about helping people reach the
highest level of what they want, because thats what
Ed Blunt and the other leaders in WorldVentures did
for him.
It doesnt matter where you are today. Its whats

LIVING
THE
CORE
VALUES
WITH FRANCO VILLARREAL

/// BY JENNIFER BRANDON ELLIOTT

30

2016 ISSUE 2 VOYAGER

Before joining WorldVentures in

April 2009, Franco Villarreal ran
a successful family business. Then
he discovered WorldVentures
could give him an outlet to be more
accessible and to help more people.

ranco owes his success to Core Value #7, Champion Full Potential:
Commit to continuous growth and learning and look for constructive lessons
in personal experiences. Getting to this point took time, however. Francos

defining moment came two years into building his WorldVentures business when
his only choices were to grow and learn to love people more, or quit.
The crazy thing is quitting wasnt an option, he insists. I just couldnt be that
person who, night after night, told people to believe in me, in the company, and
then walk away from it.
Franco has always been competitive, so challenging himself was not an issue.
He did have to confront his limited thinking around personal development. He
also had what he describes as a short fuse, and he didnt realize leaders solve
problems; they do not create them. He also came to accept he didnt have to be
right all the time.
His next steps exemplified more commitment and put him on the route to
championing his full potential. Franco attended every training available and made
sure he was mentally present for every word spoken. He began reading personal
development books such as The Dream Giver, Start with Why: How Great
Leaders Inspire Everyone to Take Action, The Energy Bus and Three Feet from
Gold. To date, hes read more than 60 books, and he listens to audios daily.
I am a completely different person than when I started out, and I know that has
helped me to become a Regional Marketing Director, he explains. Never in a
million years would I have thought any company would fly me around the world
to speak to other Reps on championing full potential.

Franco has learned if you feel youve arrived, youre on your way back. Its vital to
make the most of every opportunity and give it 100 percent. Minimal effort doesnt
cut it; then you get minimal results. Its sad to see so many people living a mediocre
life because they stopped short of realizing they had another gear, he says.
Franco has also learned to never take anything for granted. His mom just survived
her second aneurysm and his dad underwent heart surgery. Leaving his family
business and joining WorldVentures also allowed for a stronger parent-son
relationship versus that of a boss and employee. Franco has been able to enjoy
more time with those he cares about the most. He has grown a lot because of
these life-changing events. When he goes to bed at night, he says he thanks God
for WorldVentures. I just know that he has his hand on this company.

COACHS CORNER:

ARE YOU THE

LEADER OF YOUR TEAM?

/// BY MARC ACCETTA

THE LENS OF LEADERSHIP

Lets put this into a sports perspective. If you are watching a race, which
one is the leader? There is no possible misunderstanding when you ask
the question that way, is there? Its the one AHEAD of all the others! The
one who is LEADING!
So through that lens, are you the leader of your team? Are you selling
the most DreamTrips Memberships each week? Are you personally
sponsoring more Representatives than anyone else on your team?
One of the most confusing things for people in our industry to
understand is, while you can make profits from overrides when your
team sells memberships, profits should NOT be your focus.
The first thing I learned from my mentor many years ago was, my team
will duplicate whatever I am doing! One of the first things I learned to do
was to create an index card that I read every night before I went to sleep.
That card read, How much money did I earn today if my entire team did
what I did today?

t always amazes me how

many people seem to
misconstrue what it takes
to be a leader. If you ask some
people, they will give you a list
of admirable character traits
such as driven, persistent,
humble, charismatic and loyal.
If you ask others, they will point
to the rank someone holds in
our compensation plan. Others
will say its someone who leads
by example.

LEAD BY EXAMPLE
Thats a bad question for many network marketers to ask themselves.
Most people are not LEADING their team in the race, rather, they are at
the back of the pack yelling at their team to run faster!
What a difference! If you call your team today and scream at them to sell
more DreamTrips Memberships, and they all do the exact same thing,
how many sales will your team make today?
If you are challenged with math, the number would be ZERO!
I have a good friend who was a top real estate broker for one of the
worlds biggest real estate companies for many years. He was the No. 1
personal sales rep in his agency every year. Although he outranked every
agent in the agency, he always LED all of them in sales!
Thats a true leader! So, stop inspiring your team from the back of
the pack. Get in the lead, stay in the lead and watch your team duplicate
your actions!

Honoring Ancestors
While under British rule, Singapore was

in 1942. Subsequently, the Japanese
established one of the most notorious POW

TRAVEL MATTERS SERIES

TRAVEL MATTERS
/// BY JIM MENGE

his will be the first in a series on Travel Matters, exploring

travel as a force for positive disruption in our personal and
professional lives. Travel disrupts our perspective, giving us an
outlook that we might not otherwise have gained by staying in the
same place or with the same people. Travel disrupts our routine, forcing
us out of our ruts and reminding us that life, and the world around us,
has more to offer. This positive disruption leads to personal growth.
Share this series with your customers; it is brought to you by Jim
Menge, a travel enthusiast who has been to more than 100 countries.

A traveler by profession and by nature, Jim Menge has held leadership roles with some
of the worlds leading travel companies, including SABRE and American Airlines. A wellrespected author and businessman, Jim provides travel-related technology, marketing
and product development solutions to clients around the world.

the most exotic places around the globe with
my family and best friends, and make a major
positive impact on hundreds of thousands of

The nine years before WorldVentures, I was
learning how to be a successful entrepreneur.
Although I struggled because of my learning

and applying what I learned would eventually
lead to earning. Not only have I earned lifechanging income here, but I have also earned

earned wealth in relationships, friendships,

arlos Rogers recently reached

International Marketing Director
(IMD) within WorldVentures,

a long-term goal of his. Thats quite an

accomplishment for the man originally
from Birmingham, Alabama, who lived there
throughout his childhood. But anyone who
knows Carlos is well aware that he chases
and catches his dreams.
He was raised in a single-parent home. I
had to hustle with my back to the wall, ashy
knuckles and all, he recalls. My pockets were
filled with a lot of lint, but not a cent. But he
had something more valuable than money
aspirations of making a career in acting.
After attending Southern Union State
Community College in Wadley, Alabama, and
earning an associate degree in pre-business,
Carlos came back home to his old job at a
barbecue joint. He was working the drive-thru
one day when a local stand-up comic drove up
to the window. The comedian, Rickey Smiley,

to talking, and Smiley encouraged Carlos to
pursue his dream. A short while later, Carlos
picked up and relocated to Los Angeles.

CARLOS ROGERS

Although he secured some parts in various

television ads, TV shows and movies, Carlos

still couldnt eke out a decent living. And thats what prepared him for what was about
to change his life. It was late 2005 and a friend who he met in California invited him
to a WorldVentures party. There, he listened to success stories from folks within the
organization. He liked the energy he was feeling as well.

I just wanted more out of life, he says, adding that he was up for
the challenge. In the television and film industry, you get a lot of
rejection. And that prepared me for WorldVentures.
In the decade since that first party, Carlos has accomplished a lot and he is ecstatic. Ive
traveled all over the world and Ive earned more than I could have imagined being a part
of WorldVentures, he says. And just because hes reached IMD, hes not changing his
style. Ill continue to motivate people and help them achieve more out of life, he says,
and also to have more fun, freedom and fulfillment. In fact, my biggest achievement with
WorldVentures thus far is that Ive helped tons of people become financially free and also
believe in themselves again. My favorite part of the entire business is seeing people put in
the work, the effort and the sweat, and then seeing them win.
Its not money that motivates Carlos. Its the kick he gets out of seeing other people
succeed, and always educating himself, too. A curious sort, hes told Voyager in the
past that building wealth to him includes learning and understanding that he has to
perpetually teach himself new things. Not that he doesnt enjoy the wealth that comes

along with all of that, but he especially esteems his freedom. Living rich to me means
just having choices, he says. Living rich is not having any worries.
Asked what suggestions he gives WorldVentures newcomers about how to succeed in the
company, hes contemplative. My advice is to have a strong why and to always think
long-term, he says. And of course, to pursue dreams.

SARAH & MARK WIEBENGA

ike many people, Mark and Sarah Wiebenga never

quite felt fulfilled by their 9-to-5 jobs. The restraints
of a cubicle limited not only their adventurous spirits,

but also their desires to see the world.

In 2009, they decided it was time for a change. We knew
going in that we wanted to work toward owning our own
business so we didnt have to rely on jobs, Mark says. It was
that drive to not have a boss that motivated our engagement
as Reps. WorldVentures allowed us to quit jobs we didnt
enjoy, and now we havent had a job in over three years.
The Wiebengas wanderlust comes with a strong work ethic,
a quality they both retained from childhood. Mark grew up
with financial instability, and Sarah was raised on a family
farm scenarios that discourage taking things for granted.
Mark says theyve always appreciated the value of earning
something over having it handed to them.
Mark and Sarahs biggest motivator is simple: They want to
help others realize lifes true potential.
We stay motivated by knowing there are people out there
who have a chance to change their lives in a big way, like we
have, Mark says, Weve been able to see more of the world
than we ever thought possible. We remind ourselves that
others may never get that chance if we dont tell them.
In September 2015, the Wiebengas became Regional
Marketing Directors, an achievement they consider their
greatest. However, even RMD status takes a backseat to
invaluable life lessons theyve picked up along the way.
The people we have become is a priceless thing. The skills
weve learned through WorldVentures will always be an asset
to us, and that can never be taken away.

ast year, fiction became reality for Regional

be required to make ends meet for their family of eight.
After Jamila put in 10 months as a WorldVentures Rep,
those six jobs turned into three. After a year and a half,
she joined WorldVentures full time.
Jamila, whose first apartment was made available
through a low-income housing program, knew future
financial stability would take focus and determination.
She likes to quote her mentor, International Marketing
Director Scott Ross, who says, There is a reaping season
and a sowing season. You cant expect to reap in your
sowing season.
During our journey to RMD status, there was no way
we were going to look at our kids and say, We quit!
Jamila says. Our kids, our amazing team, and the group
of leaders were surrounded by keep us motivated. We
realize this isnt just about us and that keeps us
moving.
She also attributes her success to the companionship and
compatibility of her husband.
Vash is the glue that holds it all together. Hes very
approachable, which has been a key factor in building our
business. Hes a yellow personality, Jamila says, referencing
the Living in Full Color color-coded personality test
touted by WorldVentures International Director of Training
Marc Accetta. Im a red personality the polar opposite.
Im never afraid of that magic question, Are you ready to get
started? We definitely even each other out.
Above all, being a role model for their six children is
top priority on Jamila and Vashs journey to financial
freedom.
Our children are watching, she says. Its priceless for

Brandon and Courtney have found that teamwork

And its their team that motivates them. Earning extra

That mantra has clearly paid off.

VAN & KAYLA NGUYEN

umble beginnings in Tennessee were enough to

fuel Van and Kayla Nguyens desire to stray from

EMMAUS FERDINAND

also found traditional employment as a cosmetologist and

salon owner. Once the kids came, however, her work outside

his mother arranged for him to attend more advanced

their parents paycheck-to-paycheck lifestyle.

After an injury abruptly canceled Vans athletic scholarship,

he worked as a nuclear welder for more than a decade. Kayla

the home just wasnt as appealing.

Leaving school and going to a sitters house is something
we never wanted our children to experience, Kayla says.
Soon after having my first child, I wanted to be a stay-athome mom.
Their WorldVentures opportunity came knocking eight
months later. A friend came to their home with a DVD and
enough inspiration for the couple to join. Today, they work
the business full time, but getting here had its challenges.
We really needed the never give up attitude when we
were stuck at Senior Rep for 13 months, and then again at
Marketing Director for three years, Van says.
Perseverance paid off. The Nguyens achieved Regional
Marketing Director status and earned their $100K
Earner rings.
Now, the couple is reaching goals without stretching
themselves too thin. By emulating the strategies of others
and holding fast to the companys leadership tips, the
Nguyens went from having absolutely no network marketing
experience to building a life that matches their values.
The entire family benefits from the product as they focus on
creating peak life experiences. Through long-term vision
and positive focus, the Nguyens were finally able to see, and
then put, themselves in the life theyd always imagined.

hildhood days spent in a Brooklyn housing project,

a place where most end up incarcerated or dead,
were not enough to stunt the personal growth of

Emmaus Ferdinand, Regional Marketing Director. Although

schools in other neighborhoods, the more social aspects of
youth served to expose his lack of privilege.
If you didnt have the newest sneakers you werent cool,
Emmaus says. I remember going shopping for school and
having a goal of getting my first pair of Jordan sneakers. I
was so excited until I got to the cash register and my mom
told me she couldnt afford them. I made a decision that I
wouldnt depend on anyone else for the things I wanted.
Following college graduation, Emmaus landed a job at
an asset investment company where he worked for three
years. An inner voice insisted this was not the final draft
of his journey.
A life of entrepreneurship soon followed. Two years later,
his roommate introduced him to WorldVentures. The thrill
of traveling more and sharing his friends interests enticed
Emmaus to become a customer.
My favorite DreamTrip so far has been a bottle school
VolunTour to Guatemala, he says. I left with a new
outlook on life and surprisingly the trip helped me focus
more on my business.
Not so surprising is this RMDs straightforward approach
to team building and reaching goals.

I know Im a leader, so when I find someone who

reminds me of myself, its a clue. I lock arms with them
and get to work.

BUILT TO LAST

Julie Eversole, the WorldVentures Foundation

and the restoration of the human spirit. /// BY FELICIA FULLER

Julie Eversole of San Antonio has spent a lifetime

building things. For decades before her retirement,
she oversaw construction projects as a United
States Air Force major. Today, as a WorldVentures
Foundation volunteer, this career engineer funds and
assists with bottle school construction in Guatemala.

It is fulfilling to help the children

and families of Guatemala reach their
dreams through education, but it is
also heartwarming to help people have
fulfillment through their experience on
this VolunTour, Julie shares.
Julie coordinates fundraising and leads bottle
school VolunTours twice annually alongside
IMDs Janie and Raymond Braun. So far, the
group has raised over US$58,000 since 2014
and completed construction of three, threeclassroom bottle schools. A fourth school is
slated for completion this summer. All of the
schools are located within a two-hour drive of
San Martn Jilotepeque.

Helping people
I dont know is
my passion.
I dream of a day when one of the children I
met in Guatemala holds the hand of her schoolaged grandchild and says, I remember when
people we didnt even know came to Guatemala
to help us build your school, Julie says.
Helping people I dont know is my passion.
More than a giving project, bottle school
building is an emerging Eversole family
tradition. Julies daughter, Rachel,
accompanied her in 2012 when she joined

the last of a three-leg VolunTour led by IMD

Dave Watson to build the first bottle school
in El Molina. Julies husband, Kurt, joined
them on their sophomore mission that
summer. Today, four years later, the Eversole
family has taken part in seven bottle school
VolunTours and inspired many others to join
them most notably 37 people in 2015.
Once you participate in a bottle school
trip in Guatemala, you cant just go home
and forget about it, Julie explains. The
[first] experience moved something in
me to spread the word to others about
this fantastic opportunity to help others
in Guatemala. I cant imagine my life
without the opportunity to continue to go
on these trips. Life is hard for Guatemalan
families. Education opens the door to other
possibilities. Education can help make their
dreams come true.

Julie says its humbling to know what she

does today will touch generations beyond
her lifetime. After a day of service in San
Martn Jilotepeque last year, humility found
expression when she joined volunteers on
the rooftop of their hotel. High above the
ground, against a backdrop of alpine shadows,
the team sang as acoustics from a dormant
volcano played in the distance.
Dave Watson and his daughter, Sarah Olson,
were leading a non-denominational church
service for our team, she recalls. Almost
everyone had tears in their eyes as we sang
hymns. It was so inspirational. I believe that
everyone I have ever gone to Guatemala with
has come back a more fulfilled person. I dont
see how you could go through the experience
without feeling richer for it.
