Clicker Question Reflection
My questions were concerning my major Language Arts and aimed at college
education students who are currently learning about Graphemes. There were wide varieties in
the results for my questions, which leads me to wonder if the students simply didnt know the
answers, or if I had not worded the questions best. My first question was asking what the
definition of a grapheme is. All of the answers were very similar sounding, which probably led
to the trickiness of it (only 50% selected the correct answer). There also was not an obvious
distinguishing factor between A & B and C & D. For both A & B, I refer to a grapheme as
something that has to do with the written system; whereas for C & D, the grapheme has to do
with the spoken system. These are different systems, but Dr. Rubio questioned me on whether or
not it was wise to have these similar answers. I stand by the fact that written is the more obvious
answer, because, as we learned in 350, in the word grapheme, we are tipped off with the
graph part of the word, because it is connected to writing (graph graphite pencils and
writing). This is a very small clue to know that grapheme has to do with writing, but it has
helped me to distinguish between the two. I believe the answers could have been simplified so
that the testers could more easily understand them. That is one area where I know I could have
improved. Im curious to know how the results would have changed if the answers had been
simplified. I think the way the question was written led toward it sounding more like a level 3
question, rather than a level 1, but the content was simple, considering it was just asking the
definition. The other two questions of mine were definitely dependent upon how the tester
answered the first question. Therefore, there was a great split in the answers. If the tester had
gotten the first answer correct than they would most likely get the other two correct as well.
Similarly, if the tester had no idea what the first answer was, then they were more likely to not
know the answers to the next two. I think the next two questions were worded fairly well, and in
a second draft I dont think I would change the way they were written.
