COMPETITION

REGULATIONS FOR 2017




FOREWORD
The Basel Composition Competition (BCC) is an international event to be held biannually in collaboration with the Paul Sacher
Foundation and directed by our Head Juror, Wolfgang Rihm. The BCC will evaluate works for symphony and chamber orchestra.
The first edition of the competition shall take place on 1619 February 2017 in Basel.

REGISTRATION

1.1. SUITABILITY
The competition is open to all composers, with no limitation as to age or nationality.

1.2. SUBMISSION OF WORKS
The works submitted must be new, not yet premiered and adjust to the following maximum instrumentation:
Woodwinds: 2-2-2-2; Brass: 2-2-1-1; Timpani; Percussion (4 musicians max.); Harp; Piano; Strings: 8-6-5-4-3
Additional instruments or a different orchestration may be incorporated upon consultation and prior written
consent from the BCC offices. The work must be no longer than 20 minutes.

1.3. REGISTRATION FEE
Applicants must submit a registration fee of CHF 50.

PROCEDURE OF THE COMPETITION

3.1. PRE-SELECTION OF WORKS


The jury will shortlist ten works for the BCC. Three of these shall be performed at the Final Round, where the Jury shall decide
the awards to give each of the winners.

3.2. INVITATION OF THE NOMINATED COMPOSERS
The nominated composers will receive an invitation to attend the rehearsals and concerts of their works, as well as to take
part in other activities related to the BCC. The BCC shall provide hotel accommodation for the duration of the Competition, as
well as one return-trip flight in economy class, or second-class train ticket to Basel and back.
Additionally, every nominated composer shall receive a recognition award of CHF 1,000.

3.3. PERFORMANCE OF THE WORKS
The compositions will be performed at least once during the Competition concerts by the Kammerorchester Basel or
Sinfonieorchester Basel. The nominees will be invited to explain their works in talks.

3.4. AWARD CEREMONY
The laureate composers shall receive the following awards:

CHF 60,000
CHF 25,000
CHF 15,000

The awards are inclusive of the recognition prize stated in 3.2. and shall be paid by bank transfer in full, with no tax deduction.

FURTHER REMARKS

The BCC shall retain one full score and set of orchestral parts of each of the ten nominated works, for the BCC archives.
The three winners are kindly requested to include the award in their biographies and in the winning score.
The composers authorise an audio-visual recording of the concerts and rehearsals.

The BCC reserves the right to interpret all issues not included in the regulations and to make exceptions in special and
well-justified cases. The decision of the jury may not be contested.
