Dear Ms. Tremblay-Glassman,
I would like to apply for the Civil Assistant Engineer position you advertised through Monster.com. My
experience in landscape design, constructing new properties, and my knowledge in civil technology
would allow me to immediately make a contribution to your company.
I am an entrepreneur who recently went back to school to study Civil Engineering, I am almost finished
with my Associate in Engineering. I am excited to finally begin gaining more knowledge and experience
in this field. My education in civil engineering would come as an added benefit to your company. As a
civil engineering student at Salt Lake Community College, I have been studying structural, geotechnical,
and water resources. During my schooling I have become proficient with Auto Cad.
I have owned and operated my own company specializing in Landscape Architecture and maintenance.
This has been an invaluable experience, gaining knowledge of machinery and landscape construction
site. I have overseen and managed dozens of installations and have installed irrigation systems. I have
worked with project plans and am well versed in making revisions to ensure timely and quality service.
In addition, I have created countless estimates and bids for potential clients and have done all of the
required billing.
Finally, I would like to let you know of the specialized skills I have to bring to your company. I am well
versed with a large variety of machinery, skids, tampers, trenching equipment, etc., which will be useful
for on-site visits. I have done large scale installations and know how things should be running. As before
mentioned I have the knowledge and experience of creating bids, and cost estimates. I have had to
gather my own calculations to create bids and estimates.
Thank you for this opportunity to apply for your opening. I look forward to hearing from you about this
exciting position. I can be contacted through e-mail (Analynn.raepeterson@gmail.com) or by request
through phone.
Sincerely,

Analynn Peterson-Allen

CIVIL
ENGINEERING

ENGINEERS RANGING
FROM TRANSPORTATION AND STRUCTURAL
TO GEOTECHNICAL AND
EARTHQUAKE. EACH
TYPE OF CIVIL ENGINEERING ULTIMATELY
HELPS EVERY OTHER
TYPE. FOR EXAMPLE:
IN ORDER TO BUILD
A STRUCTURE A SURVEYOR MUST CHECK
THE LAND, GEOTECHNICAL MUST TEST THE
SOIL, TRANSPORTATION MUST MAKE SURE
THERE IS A ROAD AND
SO ON. CIVIL ENGINEERS
ARE A VALUABLE ASSET
TO OUR SOCIETY.

CIVIL ENGINEERS ARE

THE BACKBONE TO
MODERN LIFE. THEIR
JOB IS TO CREATE
MODERN
INFRASTRUCTURE AND
ASSURE PAST AND FUTURE INFRASTRUCTURE
IS SAFE AND SECURE.
THERE ARE DOZENS OF
TYPES OF CIVIL

ENGINEERING

GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERS STUDY SOIL

COMPOSITION. THEIR
JOB IS TO MAKE SURE
THAT THE DIRT BENEATH A FUTURE
STRUCTURE, HOME,
BRIDGE, OR DAM WILL
NOT SETTLE QUICKLY
AS WELL AS ENSURING
SAID GROUND WILL
NOT BE A PLACE FOR
POTENTIAL LANDABOVE: IMAGE OF SOIL SAMPLES
SLIDES.
GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERS TAKE SOIL SAMPLES
OF THE PROPOSED SITE TO MAKE SURE THERE
IS CHUNKY ROCKS MIXED IN WITH THE FINER
GRAIN DIRT. THEY WILL TEST UNTIL THEY FIND
STABLE SOIL, SOMETIMES REACHING UP TO 100
FT INTO THE EARTH.

WATER RESOURCE ENGINEERS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR MAINTAINING AND CONSTRUCTING

ALL OF THE WATER WAYS THAT TRAVEL TO
HOMES AND BUSINESSES FOR SEWAGE AND
POTABLE DRINKING WATER. OVER TIME OLD
STEEL PIPES CORRODE AND ONE OF THE JOBS
THAT WATER RESOURCE ENGINEERS HAVE IS
TO FIX AND REPLACE THESE PIPES BEFORE ANY
DRINKING WATER IS CONTAMINATED OR LOST.

TRANSPORTATION

ENGINEERING
TRANSPORTATION ENGINEERS STUDY TRAFFIC FLOW AS WELL AS
INNOVATE NEW WAYS
TO CONTROL AND
MANAGE THE FLOW
OF TRAFFIC. SAFETY
IS A MAJOR CONCERN
WHEN CREATING NEW
PLANS BUT ABOVE ALL
ELSE THEIR PRIORITY IS
CONSISTENT FLOW OF
VEHICLES.

WATER RESOURCE ENGINEERS WORK ON

CLEANING UP CONTAMINATED WATER SOURCES. THEY ALSO WORK WITH GEOTECHNICAL
ENGINEERS ON BUILDING DAMNS.

TRANSPORTATION ENGINEERS USE TRAFFIC

SENSORS TO HELP KEEP CONSISTANCY WITH
TRAFFIC FLOW. THEY ALSO USE AN INDUCTION SYSTEM IN THE ROADS TO KNOW THE
APPROXIMATE QUANTITY OF CARS ON THE
ROAD AT A TIME. THESE WILL SPAN ACROSS
THE STATE.

SOIL TESTING
STEP 1:
Thourough preparation for the site is one of the most important steps before sampling to
ensure proper sampling and time management. Creating equipment lists and planning for
extra personell are key to keeping on schedule. Prior to sampling, the equipment MUST be
checked and made sure all equipment is in proper working conditions. All eqduipment must
be decontaminated, so the sample is not tampered with, and covered with plastic to ensure
the equipment remains sterile.
STEP 2: Procure all items/equipment needed for sampling.
-Lab cleaned sample containers provided by the laboratory conducting the analysis.
-Sample labels
-Quality control samples
-Log book and camera
-Appropriate paperwork for site
-Means to maintain sample temperature at 4 degrees
-Portable instrumentation (e.g. Geiger counter, explosimeter, photoionization detector, ect)
- Narrow range Ph paper to check ph of preserved samples
-Appropriate personnel safety equipment
- Decontamination equipment for personnel and equipment
-Absorbant pads
STEP 3: Soil Sampling: Pick sampling device
-scoop or trowel
- bucket/hand auger
-soil coring device
- waste pile sampler
- split spoon sampler
-shelby tube sampler
STEP 4: Soil Logs:
Soil logs must be prepared to document soil types, discoloration, presence of odor, ect.
STEP 5: Wentworth scale
Use soil logs and Wentworth scale with lab report to analyze your soil.
