INTRODUCTION

ForthebenefitoftheGoldenDawncommunityatlarge,andduetocertainrecentrequests,weare
offering this transcribed document on Rosicrucian Chess to the public. The original is in the
handwriting of George Slater, V.H. Frater Vincit Qui Patitur, who wasa member of the Rosicrucian
OrderofAlphaetOmegainParisinthe1920s,andmoreofhisdocumentswillbeavailableinthe
futureinalikewisemanner.
Officially labeled Y, the present AO version contains some hitherto unpublished material, but is
alsoinformativeonhowtheychosetosplituporiginalZ.A.M.materialforthevariousAdeptusMinor
subgrades.Generallyspeaking,theAOwerequiteconservativewithregardtotheoriginalGDand
RR&ACcorpus,andchangesweremoreinthenatureofminoradditionsthanrevisions.Themajor
revisions and changes that we see in much of the SM material, from initiation rituals to official
teachings, are more or less absent. There are, however, some important exceptions to this, but
perhaps not as much as would be expected from an Order that was headed by one of the three
originalfoundersfortwodecades.
The major addition in the present document is how the figures of the die relate to the Sephirotic
Cross,whichresultsindifferentpiecesbeingmoveddependingonwhichsubangletheyarestanding
upon.ForapersonwhoregularlyplaysRosicrucianChess,thiswillprobablybethemostbeneficial
partofthispaper,togetherwiththeinstructionthatapawncanbemovedinsteadofitsmajorpiece.
The historian, however, may rather appreciate to see how the AO chose to move material and
instructions from the Zelator Adeptus Minor grade to higher subgrades. The Z.A.M. in AO did not
evenneedtoconstructhisownchessset,neitherboardsnorpieces,butcoulduseatraditionalchess
set.Thedivinatorysectionisthusalsocompletelyremovedtoahighersubgrade,whichrequiredthe
fullyconstructedchessboardswithallrelevantattributions,includingtheEnochianletters.
TheAOYpapercanthereforebedescribedasawatereddownversionoftheoriginaldocument,
with some sublime changes and some additions, where the magical and divinatory aspects of the
gamehavebeenmovedtoamoreadvancedlevel.

ThepresentEuropeangameofChesshasbeengraduallydevelopedfromthemoreprimitiveformin
whichitreachedWesterncivilisation.ItcametousfromtheArabsorsaracenicraceswhooverran
Spaininthe8thcentury.TheArabraceshadaknowledgeofthegameformanycenturiesandthey
are believed to have received it from Persia and from ancient Egypt. The game, however, in its
essentialsisfoundtoexistindescriptionsbytheoldestpoetsofIndia.Initsoldestformtraceablein
literature its name is found in Sanskrit works as Chaturanga, from Chatur = four; and Ranga =
Member.
AmongthePersiansandArabsthenamebecameShatranji.IntroducedinEurope,wefindinFrance
Echecs;inItalyScacci;inEnglandChessperhapsfromthechequeredboardonwhichitisplayed
inGermanySchach.
Inallformstheboardusedisquitesimilar,beingsquareanddividedinto8x8=64lessersquares.
Thechessmentoohavenotvariedinnumber:16piecesand16minorpiecesorpawns.
IntheChaturanga,these32menweredividedequallybetween4players,twopartnersagainsttwo,
generallygreen&blackagainstredandyellow.Eachplayerhadfourpieces&fourpawns.Dicewere
casttodeterminewhichpieceorpawnshouldbeplayed.
Theearliestimportantchangeinthegamewasthealterationmadebycombiningtheforcesofthe
partners.FromthattimetheChaturangaoutofIndialostitschaturcharacterandwasplayedby
two persons, each with 16 pieces and pawns. This change brought in other changes; for whereas
eachpartnerusedtohaveaKing,whenthetwoforceswerecombined,oneKinghadtobeconverted
intoaMinisterorVizier,whoinlatertimesbecametheQueen.
InIndiathenamesandtitlesofthepiecessuggestamilitaryideal.
In Egypt the tendency was rather to look upon the pieces as Gods of various forces and natural
powers.

The pieces were: King on the right; then Elephant; then Horse; then Ship: and the pawns were
infantry.

ThemovesoftheElephant,withcastleorhowdahonitsback,andoftheKnight,wereunalteredfor
ages.Castlingwasunknown.Pawnsmovedonesquareforwardonly,buttookdiagonallyforwards.
Dicewerethrowntodecidemoves.Dicehadfoursidesmarkedonoppositesideswith4&3,or5&
2,makingineachcase7.TheBrahminsabolishedtheuseofdice.
ChaturangaisreferredtoinValmikisRamayanaBookII,Cap51.Itisalsomentionedinoneofthe
SanskritPuranas,whereitissaidthatitwasinventedinthesecondagebythewifeofRavan,King
ofLanka;whichisCeylon.

The Elephant and the Ship, and Castle and Bishop have exchanged places. Perhaps the Elephant

ShatranjiofPersiaandArabyappearstohavebecomewellknowninPersiaabout1500A.D.
Wethenfindthatthegamehasbecomethecontestbetweentwoplayers;andtwoofthefourKings
havebecomeministersorqueens.TheearlytitlewasMantri,orFarzinorFirz,henceitissupposed
cameViergeforQueen.TheCastleandBishopchangedplaces.
ThisgameisdescribedbythePersianpoetFirdusi:acopyisextantdated1486.
ThePersianintroducedthechangeofrankinapawnbyreachingits8thsquare.
Inthe3rd,orEuropean,Epochthemoderngameofchesswasdeveloped.Theplayersbeingtwoonly
became quite defined. It was laid down that the Queen should stand on her own colour; and that
each player should have a white square at his right hand. This brings the two Queens opposite to
eachother;whereasoneKinghashisqueenonhisright,theotherhashisqueenonhisleft.Castling
hasbeenintroduced;andeachpawnhasbeenpermittedtomoveeitheroneortwosquaresatthe
first move. The queening of a pawn at the 8th square has been finally settled. The moves of the
Queen and Bishop were much altered. Formerly the Queen could only move diagonally or on her
own colour; and the Bishops, moving diagonally, could only attack the next square but one. The
Castles,orRooks,weredefinitelyplacedattheextremerightorleft.

Thepresentmovesare:
Pawns move 1 or 2 squares forward the first move, one square only afterwards, take diagonally
forwardandnevermoveback.
Kingmovesonesquareonlyinanydirection;twosquareslaterallywhencastling.
Bishopmovesdiagonallyinhisowncolouronlyanynumberofsquaresiftheyareempty,forwardor
backward.
Castle or Rook moves always in straight lines, not diagonally, and so moves over squares of both
colours,forwardsorbackwardsorlaterally,andanydistanceifthesquaresareunoccupied.
Queenmovesinstraightanddiagonallines,anydistanceovervacantsquares,forwardsorbackwards
orlaterally.
Knight.His moveispeculiar;inanydirection,butalwaystothe squarewhichmaybe describedas
two forward and one to the side; or one diagonally and then one forward always. So long as the
designedplacebevacant,itisimmaterialwhethertheadjoiningsquaresbeoccupiedornot.

Thepawnscanonlymoveonesquareatatime,andnottwoatthefirstmoveasinmodernChess.

moveoftheQueeninthisschemeisunlikethatofanypieceinmodernChess,forshecontrolsonly
the third square from herself in any direction, perpendicularly, horizontally or diagonally, and can
leapoveranyinterveningpieces:fromwhichitresultsthatshecancheckorcontrolonly16outof
the64squares,includingtheoneonwhichshestands,andtheseareallofherowncolour.

ThePlaysorRayingoftheChequersofTheTablets.

OFTHECHESSKINGTAROTACE.
Themoveofthispieceisonesquareeveryway;andanswerethtotheactionoftheSpirit,wherever
itgoethcommencingandinitiatingafreshcurrent.Whencerepresentedbythemotionofonlyone
squareinanydirection,astherestayingforthispurposebeforemovingonward.Sothathisactionis
nothurried,butrepresentsabalancedmovement.
YetinhisbeginningofactionisheatfirstamuteforceandthronedupontheWater,asintheendof
hisactionheisaLife,manifestedandthronedupontheEarth.AndhereinisamysteryoftheLord
HSwwri when enthroned between Hise and neuVquse; thus representing the beginning and
end of the action of Him in Whom Beginning and End are not, but rather concealment and then
Manifestation.
And herein is a great mystery of Life; for these thrones are not in the two active elements, seeing
that these are His Horse and Chariot of transition in the passage from Concealment unto
Manifestation.
This piece then is the symboliser of the action of the potencies of the Crosses on the Servient
Squares.

OFTHECHESSKNIGHTTHETAROTKINGKNIGHT.
Themoveofthispieceisthreesquarescornerwiseeveryway;andrepresenteththeleapingactionof
flickeringflame;whereforealsoishenotstoppedinhiscoursebyapieceoraninterveningsquare;
evenasfire,seizingonamatter,speedilyrenderethittransparent.
This piece representeth the action of Fire, as the Revealer of the Strength of the Spirit; even as
hwwristheavengerofHSwwri.
Itisaforcepotentandterrible,theKingintheElementaloperations.
Thusisopeneththelockeddoorsofmatter,andshewethforththetreasureshiddentherein.
ThereforehathallLifeitsbeginningsinaFireCelestial.

AndthenumberofsquarescoveredbythemoveoftheKnightinthemidstoftheBoard,fromthe
squareonwhichhestandeth,butnotincludingit,is16squares,ofwhich8arecheckedand8are
passedover.

OFTHECHESSQUEENTAROTQUEEN.
The move of this piece is unto every 3rd square from her reckoning the square whereon she
standethasthefirstaswellcornerwise,aswellperpendicular,ashorizontal;thusagaincovering16
squaresoutofasquareof25squares,ofwhich8arethreatenedand8passedover.
Andshethreatenethnotapieceupontheinterveningsquareofhermove.
Andhermovementisasthatofthewavesofthesea,andliketheKnightsheisnothinderedin
hermotionbyapieceonaninterveningsquare.
ThispiecerepresenteththeundulatingactionofWaterandoftheSea;andsheisascribeduntothe
GreatGoddessHise,whoistheCherisherofLife.

OFTHECHESSBISHOPorFOOLTHETAROTPRINCEKING.
Themoveofthispieceisanynumberofsquarescornerwiseinanydirection,evenuntothelimitsof
theTablet.
HerepresenteththekeenandswiftWind;andheisascribeduntoarHwueri,theGod.
Heisstoppedbyanypieceinhisway,evenasthewindisstoppedbyamaterialbarrier.
HerepresenteththeswiftvehicleoftheSpirit.

OFTHECHESSCASTLEorROOKTHETAROTPRINCESSorKNAVE.
ThemoveofthispiecerepresenteththeponderousandformidableforceofEarth;anditsmotionis
anynumberofsquaresinasquaredirection,perpendicularorhorizontalbutnotcornerwise,even
untothelimitsoftheboards.
AnditisascribeduntoneuVquse,theGoddess.
It representeth the completed action of the Spirit in Matter; and therefore is its movement
squarewise,andalsostoppedbyinterveningpieces;yetpowerfulfromthelengthandbreadthofits
range.

YSECONDPART

RITUAL.
In the first part of Ritual Y some notes on the history of Chess are given; and it is shown how
modernChesshasbeenderivedfromtheancientChaturangaofIndiaandformtheancientmagical
playeoftheChessrelatedtotheEgyptianMysteries.TheofficialancientRitualoftheRosicruciansof
the Playe or Raying of the Chequers as far as relates to the pieces and pawns, their symbolism,
names&moves,areadded.
InthisSecondPartofYsomeelementaryknowledgeofthetrueRosicruciansystem,asfarasthe
boardsusedandthemethodofsettingthepiecesandpawnsandsomerulesofthemethodofplay,
areadvanced.
InamoreadvancedGradeofAd.Min.thissystemisverygreatlyextendedtopurposesofdivination
andthesolutionofproblemscomingunderthespiritual,intellectualandmaterialheads.
TheAwakeningoftheAbodesformulaisthefirstmodeofplaytobemasteredandisheregiven;
butthereareothermodesofplay,suchasBattleFormulasetc.ofwhichonlythesimpleformsare
nowgiven.ThecomplexsystemsareexcludedfromtheviewoftheZel.Ad.Min.
ThepresentobjectisthattheZel.Ad.Min.shouldreachafurtherGradewithsomefamiliaritywith
thegeneralrulesofRosicrucianChessplayandoftheEgyptiannamesofthepiecesandpawns.

THEMETHODOFCHESS.PLAYCALLED
THEAWAKENINGOFTHEABODES
Fourpersonsareengagedintheplay;twoarepartnersagainsttwo.
Ofthesefour,oneisthefirstplayer;andinlaterGradesthequerentoftheproblemforwhichthe
gameistobeplayed.
Thechessboardusedmaybeanordinaryoneof64squares;butthefullydevelopedgameisplayed
on either one of Four Boards, which are designed as copies of the Four Enochian Tablets. These
boardshavetobemadespeciallyandareformedofanEnochianTabletfromwhichtheGreatCross
and the four Sephirotic Crosses and the cherubic Ranks have been erased or omitted; thus leaving
four sets of 16 Servient Squares. In the further Grades all the symbolism is added to these Tablet
Boards, each square showing its Triangles, Coptic or Hebrew Letters, Signs, Geomantic Figures and
EnochianLetters:atthisstagethesemaybeneglected.

and begins the game with his pieces and pawns set accordingly in the related lesser angle. The

Itwillbeobservedthatoneachcornersquaretherearetwopieces.TheadditionalpieceistheChess
Kingofeachset;andheisalwayssoplacedatthecommencementoftheGame.
Apieceorpawnthreatening,thatisgivingcheck,tothatcornersquare,thereforecheckstheKingas
wellasthepieceuponit.
ForthosenotfamiliarwithmodernChess,letitbeunderstoodthatcheckmeansthreaten:apiece
threatened by an opposing piece is always in danger of being taken a King when similarly
threatenedissaidtobeincheckandthecheckmustberemovedattheownersnextmove,either
bymovingtheKingaway;orbythecaptureoftheopponent;orbytheinterpositionofapieceinthe
lastmode,exceptasregardsQueenandKnight,againstwhoseattacktheKingmustbemoved.When
neitheralternativeispossible,theKingischeckmatedandwhenbothalliedKingsarecheckmated,
thegameisatanend.
RosicrucianChessdoethnotacknowledgethemodernChessprocesscastling,nottakingpawnen
passant,becauseapawncanonlymoveonsquare.Butapawnonreachingthe8thsquareopposite
becomes the piece of which it was the viceregent; and even if the piece is still on the board. The

A small figure of Ptah is used to mark a square specified for the Querents King to attain to, for
mysticaldivinatorypurposes;ithasnopowerintheplay,doesnotactasapieceorpawnanddoes
nothinderanotherpieceorpawnfrommovingontoitssquare.
Inthepresentsimpleform,anysquareinhisownlesserangle,exceptthatonwhichhestandsatthe
commencementofthegame,maybechosenbythefirstplayerasapointtobeaimedat;andinthat
casethisplayerwinsthegameifhisKingreachesthechosensquareandremainsthereonroundof
movesundisturbedandunchecked.
When thesocalledStalemateoccurs,whichiswhenaplayer hasnopieceorpawnthathe can
move,theKingnotincheck,theonlyresultisthattheplayerwhoseKingisaffectedloseshisturn
untilhisstateofstalemateisremoved.
ThemethodofsettingthemenvarieswitheachTabletandeachpurpose.Butheguidingprincipleis
intheorderoftheElementsintheCherubicLine.InlaterstagesthespecialTabletBoardtobeused
shouldbechosenwithrelationtotheobjectoftheGame.Butforourpresentpurpose,anyEnochian
TabletBoardmaybeused;andthisispreferabletousingtheEarthTabletonly,becausefamiliarity
withthedifferentsettingsisobtained.
