Proposal

Outline
I am choosing to make my documentary on Rebellion, The Marlow Brewery. The reason for this is
because I feel there are things about it that people will find very interesting. I have worked there for
3 years now and have a good knowledge for what goes on there and every type of Job that must be
done to make it what it is today. My main focus is going to be on the two owners Mark and Tim and
their story behind how Rebellion started. So to start off with I will be interviewing them and asking
them to explain in detail how they started this small and local company. I will introduce the
Documentary with a social event where Rebellion is the choice of drink and have me interviewing
Tim and Mark, they will be reminiscing together as friends how the brewery started. This way they
can get into the mood and focus of it being a family and friends run business to keep the
documentarys focus. I will be walking around the brewery with them whilst they are talking about
the history. The reason I think this should be done at a social event is because that is one of the
foundations of the brewery, the idea came from two friends playing cricket together. I will be
walking around the brewery with Tim and Mark as they talk to me about the Brewery. Due to its
local status I think it will be appropriate to go to one of the local Pubs to film people buying
Rebellion beer and asking the owners why they buy the beer from us and customers why they like to
drink it. After doing this I will move onto talking about the most popular beer, IPA and how they go
about brewing the beer itself, I will include time lapse in the brew house of the exchange of malt and
how they dispose of it, during this I would like to have voice overs from one of the brewers
explaining the brewing process to give the audience some knowledge of how the beer is made. The
end of my documentary will focus on Tim and Marks future plans for the Brewery.
I think that Vibe should publish my product as it is an unusual topic for a college student. I have a
chosen a very unique topic to discuss and work on for my final major project as I had this idea in
mind a long time ago. I think that I can show and produce some really good work and achieve well
with my Documentary. As this is something I really want to I think that I will put in lots of hard work
to make sure it turns out how I have imagined it for a very long time. Showing correct terminology
and shot types it will also prove how much I have learned since doing Creative Media Production
thats why you should publish my Documentary.
Target Audience
Using many different forms of feedback and Research I was able to find out a very unusual target
audience, as the focus is beer, in particular Real Ale you would have thought that my target audience
would have been of the older generations but this is absolutely not what I found.

Contact: itvpresscentre@itv.com

My first form of research was my focus group that I completed with Ollie and Aaron, I made a few
questions about my Documentary which would help me target who will be watching it and who will
want to watch it, this gave me an idea of Audience Figures which I talked about in previous Learning
Outcomes.
You can find the link to my focus group here - https://youtu.be/2uvJncNqH6M

These were the questions that I asked my Focus Group, I thought that they helped me get a rough
idea of my target audience before doing proper online research into this topic and the people that
are interested in it.

Does my documentary appeal to a wide target audience or a niche target audience if so

what is it?
What age group do you think will want to watch my documentary and why?
What gender do you think this reaches out too?
What social group do you think will be interested in this Documentary?
What would the people who want to watch this do for a living?
Where should I show my Documentary and why do you think this. For example Channel 4?

From my Focus group I found out that my Target audience for this piece will be very niche? They
can be from the age 18 and above as the documentary is about a brewery but mainly from the age
of 30+ and male. They will be from any social group as all Males seem to have an interest in Beer.
These people will also do any Job but not a job which consists of long hours. I also found that it
should be shown on Channel 4 as they like their Documentary's.
This is what I wrote after completing my focus group and gathering the information from it. The
reason I have quoted this is because I found after doing my online research where I referenced
proper information that maybe I had to change my target audience so I met their requirements.
Online Research
On the Rebellion Website there is a Beer Finder where you can see a map of all the places that sell
their beer. It stretches all the way to The Cotswolds but the main area of interest is in The South of
England. This is where my target audience are based and the location in which people are most likely
to watch my Documentary.

The reason for this is due to the amount of people who have access to Rebellion from this area.
People who live closer to the company itself are more likely to be intrigued by the Documentary as
they have the opportunity to go and see what the Brewery is actually like.

http://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2014/sep/11/good-beer-guide-2015-uk-most-breweriesper-head-population
This News article is one that tells me a bit more about my target audience and who will be interested
in this documentary. It is an article from the guardian that claims young people are starting to drink
more real ale, this has made me re assess my target audience and think that maybe it is aimed
towards a younger group of people, so maybe not from 30+ but from 18+. It said that more than a
third of young people have tried real ale and of those 87% said they plan to drink it again.

CAMRA are an organisation which stand for The Campaign for Real Ale their plan is to promote Real
Ale and they have done much research in the past 50 years to find out how to promote real ale. The
Telegraph did a story recently showing the rise in real ale popularity thanks to young people showing
more of an interest in it. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2016/03/30/thanks-tothe-hipsters-has-the-campaign-for-real-alepulled-its/

My documentary will suit my Target Audience because I have responded to positive feedback and
gathered referenced research into the type of audience that will watch my Documentary. Because I
am talking about a Micro-Brewery and in particular focusing on Real Ale I know that I will gain
interest and views from my predicted Target Audience. I will also have interviews in my
Documentary not just with the owners of Rebellion to tell us a bit more about their Ale, but a pub in
Marlow one of the locals, as to why they buy Rebellion and why its so popular. Both these factors
are reasons why I think I have suited my target audience well. I also think that because this type of
Documentary has not been done in England yet it will be a cool eye catcher.

Competitors

Contact: itvpresscentre@itv.com

A documentary that is a competitor of mine is Beer Culture: The Documentary (2013).

http://topdocumentaryfilms.com/beer-culture/ - This link here is a website that has reviews for the
top Documentaries in the world. One that I found on their website about Brewerys is this one here,
Beer Culture. From micro brewing to craft beer, the documentary Beer Culture will take you into
the beer industry and its avid brewers. My documentary is focused on a micro-brewery and how
the employers started up the business. It is very similar to this Documentary except they are working
on a bigger scale and not focusing on just one Brewery. Based in America this documentary gained
many views on YouTube which will help me to look at the audience figures for this type of
production.

You can see here from this screenshot that this Documentary gained 331,531 views on YouTube. It
also gained an 8.47 rating from 30 reviews on the link above.
Using companies such as CAMRA who are a campaign to gain interest in Real Ale I will look to have
my Documentary shown on their website as a form of promotion for myself and for the real ale
campaign. By doing this I will be able to reach similar audience figures to that of Beer Culture and
achieve highly with this Documentary. As I am including similar content such as the brewing process
and including interviews with select groups of staff and customers along with a very similar style of
filming to this documentary including time lapse I hope I can produce some real competition for this
production.
Another competitor that I found is a University student who decided to do part of her project on
Real Ale and made a 16 minute Documentary on the fall of Micro-Brewerys. Although I am not
talking about the fall of Micro-Breweries, if anything I am focusing on the rise of them. But I am
talking about real ale and the beer that Rebellion produces. This is a perfect competitor that I can
compare with as we are talking about complete opposites sides to an argument. She gained 80 views
from her video on Vimeo. https://vimeo.com/36091306.I think that my audience figures will be
higher than hers as I am reaching out to a wider target audience due to my research online and from
my focus groups. Trying to use CAMRA as well to help me I think that I will gain more views.

I think that the market could do with my documentary as it is very different to other documentaries
in terms of what I am focusing on. It is almost promoting an unsung hero and showing the audience
how this local brewery has achieved so much in the years since it started. Focusing on the family and
friend run topic I think will intrigue people because of how some of the locals know it as a very
prestige brewery and wouldnt think that such progression and success could come from two friends
at a cricket club.
Personal Requirements
When making a Production there will be expenses top most things. I have found the expenses for:

Travel If I take the bus it costs 3.70 for a student day pass and if I am filming in Marlow
every day for 5 days that will cost 18.50, if one of my cast members drives me there each
day it will cost me 5 pounds in Petrol.
Food There will be no Food involved in my Documentary but if I need lunch I can take 5.
Accommodation N/A
Props N/A
Cast and Crew - 360, this is for Finley to help me with the camera on 3, 5 hour days.

Ideas
Here are my two initial ideas for my Documentary which I had to decide between the two. I used
things such as survey monkey and my own preference to choose between these ideas, gaining good
feedback from my peers also helped me to decide between the two.

Contact: itvpresscentre@itv.com

Why I chose the Brewery

This is a mood board I made shortly after I chose to do
the brewery. It is an idea of the sort of thing I want my
production to look like using images.
I chose to do my first idea as it was the most popular
when I collected my responses from survey monkey. I
also think that doing the first idea for my documentary
will be a lot more engaging to the audience as it is
something that is in the local area, people are more
likely to want to watch it if it is something that is
happening nearby. As I have worked at the brewery for
3 years I have strong knowledge of the history and how
the company works, along with access to very key staff
and equipment there that I need to film, I think this will
help to make it a lot more interesting. From my
responses you can see that people want me to do the
documentary on the brewery as I have access to a lot of
knowledge about the place and the history to make it
more interesting. The reason that I dismissed my other
idea was not only because I gained less positive
feedback from it on Survey Monkey but it was a topic that I had previously worked on, therefore
thought I might get bored of doing this as my idea. I needed to focus on something that I would
enjoy and that I have a good knowledge on myself. Even though I play video games I think that it
wouldnt be as interesting a documentary compared to Rebellion.
