Stop Motion Evaluation

I had to create my own stop motion by following the rules and regulations that the brief
stated, this was to have the advert ready to air for the set time and date my brief stated.
My brief asked me to create a short television advert to be broadcast for a new television
channel. When making the advert, I had to stick to the rules and regulations otherwise I
could breach the contract. I negotiated that I wanted my advert to be slightly longer than
thirty seconds as my advert would not flow properly.
I wouldnt really compare my work to any animators as none of them have used moving
images like I have, In a way, I could link mine advert back to the first ever moving
images, the Luminere Brothers. Louis photographed the world around him and some of
his first films were 'actuality' films, like the workers leaving the factory. The brothers
began to open theatres to show their films. In the first four months of 1896 they had
opened Cinmatographe theatres in London, Brussels, Belgium and New York. A three-inone device that could record, develop and project motion pictures, the Cinmatographe
would go down in history as the first viable film camera. Like the brother, I was
responsible for capturing the models whilst using a tripod to keep the camera steady to
avoid any shakiness so it look presentable and professional as possible to the viewers.
Similar to the brothers, I used a high frame rate to ensure all movement of my models
was fast and smooth so it looked realistic.
Camera angles
Lighting
Frame rates
I think my animation has gone
really well. I feel like I have
captured some really nice
images that are clear and detail,
I used a cannon eos six hundred
D along with a wide angle lens
to capture as much scenery as
possible in order for it to look
eye striking for the viewers,
However I do feel like I could of
improved some of the camera
angles, especially towards the
end as I rushed slightly in order
to get the production ready on
time. I feel like I have met the
brief as it asked for the indent to
be creative and represent individuality.
I edited all my images so it looked more professional for example I changed the colour
saturation to make it look smoother. As shown on the right, the original image below is
nice, but slightly colourless and not as striking as the top, I used the colour tool on
premier pro and ,made the image look slightly more rich by using the using the tint tool. I
feel the edited image looks a lot better than the original image, I edited all the images
throughout by pasting attributes to each frame. My audience also agrees with this as all
the people that took my survey said they thought my advert looks visually good, as you
can see from my survey. I do feel I could have developed my images slightly more, by
this I mean by adjusting the contrast of the images slightly more just slightly, to make
them look more striking.

I used a wide angle lens as I mentioned, I feel it

really shows in the frame on the right, along
with this I used the three
grid view with I feel brought
a lot of the scenery out along
with the subject stood
behind the tree. My advert is
very smooth, this is because
I used ten frames per second
which makes it a good
persistence of vision, my audience agreed with
this, all of them saying that they feel it has a
good frame rate. As you can see from my
survey, my peers thought the frame rate
worked well.
In my production I used natural lighting as I was shooting
outdoors, luckily that day the weather was generous so it
wasnt difficult to shoot, the lighting made the subject and
scenery stand out as it was rather sunny, however I did
turn the brightness up slightly in order for it to stand out
to my audience. I used many different camera angles within my advert, one of them
includes the point of view shot, so from someones perspective, which always gives the
audience a good insight of the characters mind and their perspective, however I do feel
for this scene, the duration went on for a tad longer than expected, If I could go back, I
would or shortened it slightly.
I do feel like it could have been improved, if I could change it I would have promoted the
product slightly more so I would have taken pictures of one of the main characters
holding the camera; however I still think my audience would still understand what the
advert is promoting.
I used a close up to introduce my advert, I chose to capture leaves whilst the
camera was slowly panning to the right to show the main character, so it went
from close up to long shot
which I feel works really well in
my advert as I am suppose to
be advertising a product i have
to show my audience what it can of in order for it
to be eye catching. The viewer is drawn into the
scenery and gets a key sense of location straight
away, which in this case is set outdoors in
woodland areas. I feel this shot is a good way to
start my advert because the colours contrast
from the bleak background making the leaves
stand out more; along with this I used the three
grid view for the majority of shots in my
production. I feel this gives the viewer something
more for the eye, and especially, which in my
case is an advert, is very important to capture
the surroundings around the subject focus. I
should of used a few more of these close ups, I
feel it would of advertised the product slightly more, showing what the camera is capable of doing.
I also feel I could make the image look sharper by using the tint tool on premier pro, It looks like I
needs slightly more contrast. One of my comments I got back from my peers were photos are
really good, but could be slightly sharper, which I feel I could improve on.

Next time I would take images of more settings, its only because I had to change my
idea because the weather wouldnt of looked good at all in my animation, I was

supposed to capture my images in Bourmouth but it didnt work because of the weather.
As a result I had to change my idea so I came up
with the idea of two friends messing around and
having a good time. I feel like it would relate to
my target audience as my brief didnt give one
so it was left to me to come up with it, I dont
have a specific target audience because I feel
like my advert is
aimed at
everyone. From my
feedback my peers
said the models
look and are
dressed casually which fits in with the story

I personally feel I have met the brief because I am the only

one thats used images which is relatable to television adverts as the majority of them
are moving images, however mine is stop motion which I feel stands out against all other
adverts being broadcast on television, It also stands out against other camera adverts.
My stop motion animation and the PEN story are the most similar camera adverts there
are. Both animations tell a slightly different story, mine tells the story of a friendship
whereas PEN shop how time has gone by, however both adverts are very meaningful to
my target audience. A similarity between the two include the same target audience,
despite my advert featuring younger models and the Olympus camera advert featuring a
wide range of ages, it still has the same appeal to the audience, meaning the advert is
still aimed at all ages.
Improving animation
One thing I would improve on some of the camera angles, especially towards the end as I
was running out of time to shoot, however I tried to make every angle look as
professional as possible. Also, I would of used another setting and added more props in
has I feel it is slightly bland at times, however my audience disagree and think there has
been a fair element of creativity in there according to my survery. One thing my
audience said I could improve on was maybe changing the location, this was my original
plan, but didnt go well because of weather conditions so I had no option but to choose
one location and stick to it.
I asked people on my survey what I could have improved on, one peer stated that I could
have taken pictures of the pictures. I had the idea of printing out the images, placing
them on a piece of white flat cardboard and drawing black pen around it so it looks like a
viewfinder. However, I was very pushed for time as I had to change my idea at the last
minute, one of my peers on my survey monkey commented that I could have taken
photos of the photos. However some peers commented Really good, nothing needs
improving
I feel I am very much suited to the animation industry as I feel I have made a well
composed, different and striking advert, which I feel stands out against others and is a
fresh take on advertisement within television.
I really enjoyed filming my production, even though I had to change it a slight bit, I feel it
came out well and that the end product looks professional and worth airing on the new
channel. I didnt enjoy parts of editing, for example minimising the frame rates, it
became very tedious and took a while, and also, ordering each scene took a long time.
However, I did enjoy changing the colours of the pictures as shown in the example on the
right; I wanted to make the images richer and not as blue.

I feel the majority of my feedback so extremely positive, I

feel I have done a good job of sticking to the brief and
would be satisfied with the creativity of my production. My
animation told the story of two friends having a good time
whilst promoting the product, the camera. I aimed my
production at mostly the
people of over sixteen, at
this age I feel you get a real
sense of how a camera
captures images and have a
real interest in it.
I feel like I followed the brief
well. The brief stated that
the advert must present
creativity and individuality
which I feel I have really met. I had negotiated with Vibe
productions before filming that it would be over thirty
seconds long. I have met the brief by filming moving
images and feel my advert is great for the channel. In
order for my
production to be
ready on time, I
had to make sure
I
had enough to
film and edit my production. As
its stop motion, it
would take a longer time to
edit, meaning I
had to make sure I timed
filming and
editing right. My production was
ready to air on
the 11th of March at seven,
which is stated
on the brief. I feel I
communicated
with the client very well, they
let me change
the brief slightly and allowed
me to be creative
as possible, which I feel I have
really shown in my advert. I have met legal implications by not using any form of offence
language (as it is silent), In no way does my advert discriminate or offend any form of
race or religion.
