Mrs. Corri-Anne Burgess ROOM 801 cburgess@sandi.net TEXT: Getting to Know ArcGIS Desktop: Third Edition Mapping Our World Using GIS COURSE DESCRIPTION: GIS & Global Technologies is a one year college level course which is designed to provide basic understanding of concepts in Computer/Technology Literacy, the Global Positioning System, Geographic Information Systems and career opportunities in these fields. Students will learn how to use different technology to analyze human and environmental problems. Students will first learn by completing modules/models already created and then during the second half of the course they will create projects to answer questions that they devise. GIS is a growing field of research and analysis in the science and business world. This course will provide hands-on experience with industry standard software. STANDARDS & OBJECTIVES: This course is an elective course which meets the requirements of an elective course to meet the graduation requirement of San Diego City Schools. The course also meets the technology literacy graduation requirement. Students can apply to receive 3 course units from Mesa College and they will receive UC A-G credit if they successfully pass the class. This course addresses competencies within the Information Technology Career Pathways, Information Support & Services Pathway. GRADES: This is a computer course and therefore the majority of the grades will be assessed through computer labs. Sufficient time will be given for students to complete labs during the class. It is the students responsibility to complete and hand in all computer labs on time. If you are absent from class, it is your responsibility to make up the work that you missed during class. There will be quizzes in this course based on terminology and theory of GIS. This course is designed to build your GIS computer skills throughout the term. The final assessment will be an independent study that will be proposed, researched and presented by the student. Respect for individuals and property is essential for all students to succeed and for everyone to get along. Food & Drink: Students are prohibited from eating in the classroom. Only water may be consumed in the classroom. Attendance: A tardy will be recorded if you are not in your seat when the class begins. More than 5 unexcused absences in one grading period (approx. 9 weeks) will result in an automatic F for that grading period. It is your responsibility to clear your unexcused absences with the SCT office. Saturday school will be assigned to those students who have repeat tardies or unexcused absences. One Saturday school will clear 4 tardies or 4 class periods. Homework: It is anticipated that there will be minimal homework for this class. Projects may be worked on at home, but there will be time for completing assignments in class. Computer Use: Computer use in an academic environment is a privilege, not a right. No software may be installed on any computer without the specific permission of the teacher. No software or computer setting may be altered or deleted. Hardware may not be damaged in any way. Violation of these rules will result in the removal of computer privileges, and consequently the failing of the course and not completing the graduation requirement. Computer activity is monitored, all activity can be viewed by the teacher, nothing done on the computers in this classroom should be considered private.
