Consider geothermal hot water at P,;; it is throttled to Pin a unit called a flasher and saturated vapor is
used to drive a turbine that exhausts a wet mixture at P;. The saturated liquid is returned back to the
sound. As flash pressure P» is decreased, more vapor is produced and hence, more mass of vapor is sent
to turbine, However, expansion ratio in turbine is reduced with reduced work output per unit mass of
‘vapor in turbine. Thus, there exists optimum flash pressure at which work output by turbine in KJ per kg
of geothermal water is at maximum. Determine the optimum pressure P, if T, = 250°C, P, = 4000 kPa,
and if outlet pressure P, is fixed at 0.10 bars (Figure P2.24).
