Thisunitwillengagestudentsinconductingaresearchprojectthatbuildsknowledge
aboutatopic,asksstudentstofindfactsandwriteindetailtoreportonthattopic.
StudentswillgatherinformationfromtextanddigitalsourcesaboutUnitedStates
NationalParks.

UnitOverview:
Thegoalofthisunitisforstudentstobecomemorecomfortableandsuccessfulin
lookingupsourcesandtakingnotesonaspecifictopic.In2ndgrade
CCSS.ELA.Literacy.W.2.7&2.8staterespectively,Participateinsharedresearchand
writingprojectsandRecallinformationfromexperiencesorgatherinformationfrom
providedsourcestoansweraquestion.Studentshavebeenintroducedtowritingreports
andgatheringsourcesbutinthirdgradewewantthestudentstotaketheinitiativeon
findingtheirownnotes,throughsourcesprovidedbytheteacher.Lastly,studentswill
taketheirwrittenreportstopresentationmodewheretheywillpresenttotheirpeers.
WiththehelpofDigitalLearningObjects,studentswillhaveasuccessfulexperiencein
findingnotesfortheirreport,writingandpresentingtotheirclassmates.TheDigital
LearningObjectshelpmakesurethatstudentsarefullyexcellinginthelessons.

Theoverallgoalofthelessonsistomatchlearningoutcomesthatstudentsneed
toaccomplishwheninthirdgrade.Studentsaretobeabletoresearchatopicandwritea
wellwrittenreport.InadditiontothereportIhavethemmakeaPowerPointoverthe
informationtoshowtotheirclassmatestohighlightsomeareasoftheirreport.
SomethingnewIwouldliketoincorporatethisyearismakingBrochuresoftheir
NationalParkusingGoogleDraw.Studentswilltakeapre/posttestoverhowtoproperly
takenotesonatopicandsortinformationintocorrectcategories.Testswillbe
administeredthroughSchoolNet.LessonresourceswillrevolvearoundStoria,iReady
Toolbox,GoogleSlides,GoogleDocs,andGoogleDrawing.

storiesandbeaskedquestionsbasedoffwhetherinformationbelongssomewhereelsein
theoutlineorifsomeitemsweremisplaced.Studentswillalsobegivenaplainoutline
withnostoryandhavequestionstoansweraboutthemwiththesametopic.Students
shouldhaveagoodideaofhowtotakenotesandwherecertainitemsshouldbewhen
sortinginformationaboutatopic.iReadyStudentswillberemindedoffindingmain
ideaanddetail.GoingintodetailIwillhavethemwatcha30minutevideothat
correlatestothe3rdGradeReading/LanguageArtsStandards.Thevideoisstrictlyabout
findingkeyideasanddetails.Studentswillfollowstepbystepinhowtofindmainideas
anddetailsandhowtosortinformation.Thiswillbewholegroupinstructionforthe
studentssincemuchofthisinformationwithtakingnotesandfindingdetails.
Thefriendsinthevideolessonaretryingtolearnaboutculturesincetheyhavea
friendvisitingfromoverseas.Thevideoallowsfordiscussionofeachparttomakesure
thestudentsknowwhattheyaredoing.Theinteractivepartofthevideoallowsstudents
tohelpthefriendschooseanswerswhilereadingdifferenttopics.Theclosereadingsgo
alongwiththevideostheme(culture),butstillisatalevelthatthirdgraderswouldbe
abletograspandcomprehend.iReadyisalsoniceandaccommodatesallstudentswhere

Mostofthestoriesareinthe3rd6thgradebandrangeandsomewordsmayposeasa
challengetothestudents.Thesecondtimethatwereadthestorywewillpractice
highlightingareasthatareimportanttothereportwriting.Thehighlightingisnice
becauseitautomaticallysavesforthestudentsoiftheyneedtorevisittheystillhavetheir
highlighting.Theycanusedifferenthighlightercolorstohelpkeepideasinorder.The
lasttimewereadwillbefornotekeeping.Studentscanlookattheirhighlightedsections
andcopydownimportantfactsabouteachpage.Iwanttomakethestudentsawareof
notetakingvs.writingsentences.(Moststudentsenjoythispartbecausetheystill
somewhatstrugglewithwritingsentences.)Studentscanthencopytheirnotesandprint
ortakescreenshotsoftheirworktohavewhenwritingsentences.Icombinedthese
lessonstogethersincestudentsareusingthesamematerialsandrereadingtheinformation
multipletimes,butgettingusedtousingtoolsfortakingnotes.Sincethisisjustpractice
notetakingstudentsalsoreadtextsthatmaynotbeofusetothem.Theyneedto
understandthatnoteverythingtheyread,thatmaybeassociated.Theymaybeableto
findsomeusefulinformationfrompartsofbooks,buttheyneedtoknowthattheydont
needtofindalloftheirinformationfromonesource.

independentlywiththeguidancefromourtechnologyteacherandmyself.Thisisabrief
lookintotheirparksinceallofthestudentsendupgettingadifferentpark.Thisallows
