As if a sign had been given to me from


the sea
Alexander Blok has a memorable and rather
arbitrary image in one of his poems which I
quote above. He belonged to a generation of
seekers and mystics in the wake of the
Russian Revolution, and in some ways might
be considered comparable to the late Hippie
generation intellectuals of Europe, such as
Jakob Bronowski, in face of the positivism and
market economics, snuffing out all fantasy,
which was to come in the Reagan-Thatcher
generation just after.. My Calvary.
These antimonies are still with us, but
prompted by unexpected information about
an unusually creative ecumenical move
between Westminster and Canterbury
cathedrals on the one hand; and by an
equally unexpected yet small personal
conflict of no real importance on the other I
have recently been prompted to follow Eliots
bird into some sort of creative garden and

take soundings (as Thoreau might have done,


of ice...).
The ice, of course, in this context, is just that
which even in spring is prone to clog up
the human heart and set all our enterprises
back to zero. But there is more.
The prime realization emerging is
unsurprisingly about peace and the
possibilities of diminishing conflict and human
antagonism. Wherever they arise.
Where does this reflex come from? The myth
of Cain and Abel is I think very relevant
(Phillipa Pearce hints at it, with a masterly
economy, in Toms Midnight Garden). After
considering the symbolic importance of Ely
cathedral in this novel, and remembering how
all the glass there was destroyed and the
sculptures disfigured, it was not difficult to
extrapolate this to the modern day
destructions we hear of in Iraq and
Afghanistan of the very archaeological record
which defines us as Europeans, Near Eastern
peoples, and Asians a population which is a

sizeable and significant chunk of the civilized


world: a civilization obviously to be
reduplicated and refocused in the New World
when the time came...And to our infinite
enrichment.
And since charity begins at home, I had to
imagine, too, whence an unexpected and
unwelcome emotion arriving at my doorstep
or rather, in these times, on my computer
screen arose; and I have thus had to begin
the process of reconciliation with an apology
and confession of any weaknesses of my
own.. In all circumstances, one can but hope
for understanding, pardon, and
forgiveness...The other is always unknown.
This will be seen below, also, in its due place.
But music, too, emerged. I had been
enthused by a Hungarian Easter hymn, and
had noted it down and musing overnight on
the fragility of human entente had
recomposed it somewhat, and written the
results down. The composition , short as it is,
may be viewed here, in both score and audio

version; and there is an organ interlude too;


although it the brief insight is less important
for what it is than what it suggests: that is
to say, the world of Robert Carver, in whose
footsteps I (in minuscule fashion and for
about six minutes) I tread; and it speaks, too,
about the needless antagonism of humans
which comes merely from an inability
amongst many to accept that God has
created us all, to coin a musical phrase, with
unequal temperaments...
Such temperaments are not present in this
SSSA setting, however...
And thus difference, deviance, new points of
view, an upsetting of apple carts is to be
expected. It is not badly meant. It is part of
the human condition. And how I pray that its
fruits may be understood and tolerance
emerge in especially the Caucasus, in Islamtroubled Europe, and in the more insidious
and spiteful unsung conflicts lurking under
the surface of many respectable countries
whom I will not name... Conflicts as trivial as

mine or as extended as that facing an entire


sector of an economy. These really are blocks
on the path to salvation; and they should be
dissolved, in time; they must not be allowed,
permanently, to be...
There follows a poem, an attempt at expiation
and reconciliation, an artistic response to a
human dilemma. How to quiet a raging oil
well of hate which had been trodden on
purely accidentally? I might not have been
Red Adair, but I could substitute for George
Herbert on his rest day, and so I was for an
afternoon, twelfth man for one match...The
answer was emblematic of the task we all as
humans have to face every day, to confront,
accept, and even ideally love...difference.
God has made us in myriad ways. That is the
rub.
I add some links. the Brahms Requiem, of
course, the Carver (which is a new Sistine
ceiling unknown to most) and some Dupr

quote, of course, the best version of the
closing speech of the Tempest that I can find

is a shade curtailed. But imperfection is as it

In memoriam of a Saint whose relic lies at


Esztergom...
In 1844, Tischendorf, by then nominally a Privatdozent
at Leipzig (his reading of the overwritten Biblical text of
the Ephraemi manuscript, previously thought
irrecoverable, had won him considerable renown), but in
fact out in the field and looking for evidence, visited the

in charge cheerfully informed him that two basketloads
of such discarded leaves had already been fed to the
oven.

At the end of this, with the descending B flat Major scale so
simple, it is a hard heart indeed that is not melted almost
to tears. What is the music saying? That all our sacrifices
have been, and continue to remain, worthwhile...
What is the link? Well, Taveners twin brother also suffered
from a hereditary heart condition, and was wheeled into
the operating theatre listening to this piece.
The only honest reaction to the Klemperer is to play it
again, it is so explanation defying...
But clearly it, too, speaks of peace...but peace obtained only
after a Titanic struggle.
And its good to here it now, not long after Taveners death,
and when his website looks a bit gone to seed and down-atheel. His time will come back.
