N479 Leadership Management Shadowing Activity Form

Your Name: Ray Alvarado

OConnell

Date of Activity: Friday, March 4th, 2016

Faculty name: Mary

Who did you shadow (add their credentials too): Jillian, RN and Kirk, RN.
Role of this leader and where do they practice? (Be specific)
A SWAT nurse was developed when studies revealed the inefficiency, and dangers associated
with intrahospital critical care transport. SWAT stands for Specialized Workforce for Acute
Transport. During transport, too often patients are left unattended for short periods of time where
adverse changes could take a turn for the worst. For example, a patient could start to deteriorate,
or have lines and tubes dislodge and even a loss of an airway during transport when they are left
unattended for up to 30 minutes or are under the care of nonnursing personnel. Not only does a
swat nurse transport acute patients, but they can also provide support in almost all areas and units
on the hospital. Bedside procedures are one of the other main duties of a swat nurse. If a nurse
caring for a patient is having trouble with a bedside procedure such as inserting an IV or placing
a Dobhoff, a swat nurse could be consulted into the room.
Discuss the benefit and value of this experience to you (Be specific).
During this experience I was able to how the swat nurse was utilized in many units across the
hospital. For example, I accompanied the swat nurse when she was consulted to the ICU for a
Dobhoff insertion. Immediately afterwards, we had another consult for an IV insertion on the
pediatric unit. What was interesting about the swat nurses role was the fact that they would
provide assistance to all ages across the lifespan. During a tour of the hospital I was able to visit
the NICU and see a 700gram baby. Even though the NICU didnt need any assistance that day,
its amazing to know that a nurse is capable and knowledgeable to provide nursing care to such
diverse populations.
Would you recommend this specific shadowing experience in the future; why or why not?
(Describe why or why not)
I would definitely recommend this shadowing experience to any nursing student. This field,
particularly at Banner, is actually quite new and therefore, some units are unaware of the
resources they have to offer. This infers that the probability of nursing students are unaware of
this type of position. As a future new grad, I would most certainly like to be aware of every
single resource that I could utilize in order to provide the best care possible.
