Choose a song or musical composition that communicates your

experience with writing and UWRT 1102. Consider including a video of the
song. Explain your choice.
In choosing a song that displays my experience with UWRT 1102, I chose the Man in the
Mirror by Michael Jackson. I chose this song because in writing every piece has a purpose and
every writer has to do some form of reflecting rather its on their surroundings or personal
reflecting. I also chose this song because every writer is trying to convince the reader to see the
message that they are conveying from their point of view. In the song the Man in the Mirror,
Michael Jackson sings about reflecting on yourself and looking around you to see the purpose of
changing and reflecting. My personal experience in this writing class has shown me ways to
express my opinion, but in a way that my readers can understand. In my past writing assignments
I would often forgot about the audience; however now I take my audience in consideration.
If you were to teach this class, what ideas would you emphasis?
If I were to teach this class I would emphasize the ideas of using a daybook because the
daybook is a way for a writer to express their feelings and emotions that they encounter in a
situation. Also the daybook gives a writer freedom and allows a writer to write with relaxation.
Another idea to emphasize in this class is using the They Say I Say (TSIS) book; it helps the
writer tie ideas together such as outsider opinions with personal opinions. The TSIS book gives
techniques to transition between quotes and phrases. I would also emphasize small group
conferences because it allows the writer to be critiqued and receive feedback from a readers
perspective. Having small groups can help the writer understand readers on a personal level
through personal feedback. For example if the paper was on divorce, the writer can get feedback
and personal experience from the reader.

Explain how your understanding of rhetorical knowledge has changed

over the course of the semester using at least three examples from your
writing. Ex. Did you shift an assignment to better fit a particular genre like a
proposal?
Rhetorical Knowledge is the ability to focus on a purpose and to analyze and respond to the
needs of a particular audience, as well as comprehending different text. My rhetorical knowledge
has changed over the course of the semester because I began to write keeping in mind my
audience and the message that I am trying to convey in my paper. For example when writing my
thesis paper on divorce, I made sure that I let my readers know the reason as to why I was
writing the paper in the first place. Another example would be figuring out my particular
audience for my topic; I wanted to make sure that any type of reader could understand my text.
Comprehending my peers text was another example of the way that my rhetorical knowledge
has changed in the course because now I am able to analyze and critique a variety of writing
styles.
Explain how your critical reading has improved during the semester. Ex. In
what ways did you read across texts for connections and patterns in your
inquiry?
Critical reading is analyzing and recognizing content in a paper. When analyzing my
writing and others writing, I have learned the proper way to critique it. My critical reading has
improved because I was able to help my classmates bring in other writers point of view and
connect them with their view. I have learned how to understand or figure out an authors purpose
as well as understanding the tone of the passage or paper. With critical reading I have learned
how to recognize if an author or writer is being bias.

Discuss your composing processes. Ex. Did you conduct additional

research while revising or after consulting a colleague? Provide at least three
examples to support your assertion.
I would define the composing processes as the methods used to demonstrate strategies for
drafting, revising, editing, rewriting, and formulating goals for a text. When working on my
composing process I did extensive research on divorce to ensure that I was viewing divorce from
every angle there was. For example, I researched divorce based on culture, age groups, and
ethnicities. In the composing process I also revised my text once I received feedback from my
peers in the small group conference. Another way I used composing processing was by using the
library database search engine. Using the library search engine has helped me find peer reviewed
text and credible sources. Utilizing the TSIS book has helped me formulate sentences that have
helped me make my text stronger as well as future writing assignments. I enjoyed the way the
TSIS book gave several examples on how to make your writing better, such as bringing in a well
known person like Martin Luther King Jr.
Provide at least three examples of your knowledge of conventions Ex.
sentence level changes, MLA citations.
Knowledge of conventions is formal and informal guidelines that define a correct piece
of writing; it deals with spelling and attributes of sources such as MLA and APA citation. For
example, I learned how to properly incite an author when using their quote. Another example,
would be proofreading my work out loud to see if my paper flows smoothly. Having text to flow
smoothly is important so that the reader can understand the message that the writer is trying to
convey. From the Knowledge of Conventions I have gained the knowledge of learning certain

jargon for certain genres. For example, when reading a science article versus a magazine or
journal entries; each one of these genres has its own particular language.
Critical Reflection: A) Explain the importance of reflection in learning
processes. B) Explain what you think is important in providing commentary
on others work and receiving commentary on your own. C) Provide at least
three examples of your nuanced use of commentary in your writing projects.
It is important to reflect in the learning process because it helps a writer analyze their
own work and make improvements on their work. I think when providing commentary to others
work, it is important to comment on the good and the bad in the paper. The comments made
should be suggestions and not you need to change this. Also I feel that it is important to tell
the writer why you are suggesting them to change a particular part; this can help them understand
a readers point of view.
An example of nuance in my writing projects would be switching or alternating my
words in my papers. When I was writing my inquiry paper about divorce I kept using divorce,
divorce, divorce, instead of looking up a synonym for it; which I discovered later in my research.
Another nuanced use of commentary throughout my projects would be making my text clear for
my reader to understand; in my text I would be wordy or adding too many words in a sentence
which made it unclear. Another example would be, noticing my peers nuanced commentary in
their writing such as using a phrase to support their message. One of my peers used the
catchphrase dont bring sand to the beach and she had to explain it to my small group.
