Describe how your career or profession (that you plan to continue and/or pursue

once you complete the B.S. in Interdisciplinary Studies), has changed in recent
years. Identify the critical skills that the profession/career requires. If you are
undecided or caught between two, choose one that you think you are most
interested and/or that you most qualify for. If you plan to pursue graduate school or
a graduate program, describe the pre-requisites for the program and how they have
adapted, shifted; identify the critical skills needed for the graduate program. In
either case, provide an honest assessment of how your abilities and skills "fit" the
job, profession, or graduate program? How might the abilities and skills that
interdisciplinarity fosters improve the "fit"? (think about the traits of an
interdisciplinarian)

Throughout my time as a student I have been undecided about the position that I
would like to pursue upon graduation. Originally I wanted to be a counselor for at
risk youth particularly a License Professional Counselor (LPC) or a Licensed Clinical
Social Worker (LCSW). Recently I have considered being a Family Service Specialist
which in essence is a Social Worker. The skills needed to do this position are good
listening skills, empathy, sympathy, and compassion. I believe Interdisciplinary
Studies would allow me to integrate both Sociology and Psychology. Both of these
disciplines certainly deal with empathy, sympathy, compassion and an
understanding of human behavior and well as social order, disorder, and
understanding of social behavior. These skills would definitely be helpful for a Family
Service Specialist. They would assist me with breaking down the walls with the
individuals I am assisting and helping them to understand that my job is to assist
them and allow me to understand how to meet them where they are.
