Standard 7

Professional Engagement
Engage professionally with
colleagues, parents/carers and
the community
As I am studying a Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of
Education (Primary/Early Childhood) I am a firm
believer in the fact that parents/carers/families are
children and students first and most influential
educators (DEEWR, 2009) and that teachers should
always work in professional collaboration with
parents/carers to work towards the best possible
learning goals for the students (7.3) During some
of my practicums, in both early childhood and
primary settings, I have been provided with
opportunities to engage with the parent/carers and
discuss strategies to assist their childs learning
(7.3). While I attended my January placement for
Professional Experience III, I was fortunate enough
to be able to volunteer and work alongside my
mentor teacher in the schools community garden.
This gave me opportunities to professionally
engage with the parents/carers on an shared
interest-based level, making that positive
partnership building even more significant (7.4)
