4 Directed Distance
Instructional Objectives
Given 2 lines, I can find the directed distance between the two and the
equation of the angle bisector.
Given a line and a point not on the line, I can find the distance between the
two.

Lesson:
Motivation: This lesson will be our third and final day with the content of
section 2.4. The goal will be to show our understanding with the content of
the section. Students will use prerequisite knowledge both from earlier
lessons in this section and from earlier sections in this unit to better
understand this lessons material. Students will use what they learned from
sections 2.1 and 2.2 to help them understand the equations they will create
for angle bisectors.
1. Group Activity (30 min)
2. Individual Hw time (15 min)
3. Exit slip (10 min)
Instructions:
ii. Question 2
1. d1 = d2 (acute angles)
2. d1 = d2 (obtuse angles)
iii. Question 3
1. Using (0,0) as a point and the formula d = |d 1d2|
2. Finding a point on one line and then find the distance
to the other line
3. Using the y intercepts as a way of measuring the
distance. This distance will not be measured at a
perpendicular
d. Class discussion:
i. How do the different strategies compare?
ii. How did you know what relationship of distances to
choose?
iii. Why cant we measure the distance between two lines by
finding the distance between y intercepts?
2. Use the strategies we have discussed in todays group work to
complete the Hw set listed on your calendar. Be sure to show your
work.
a. This can be done individually or in partners/small groups.
Students should be sharing their thinking with each other.
3. Exit slip
a. Anticipated Strategies
i. d1 = d2 (obtuse angles)
ii. d1 = d2 (acute angles)
Standards Addressed:
G.GPE.B.7 Use coordinates to compute perimeters of polygons and areas of
triangles and rectangles, e.g., using the distance formula.
