Biography on the Band Boston
Boston is a Classic American rock band that was created in Boston Massachusetts United
States by Tom Scholz and epic records. The band leader of Boston is Tom Scholz who was born
and raised in Toland, Ohio and who is the band is centered around. The band formed in 1976.
The band has had an interesting start, a lot of success, adversity and has a lot of members come
and go.
It all started when Scholz attended MIT in 1969 and began to write music and songs. This is
when he wrote the song titled For play. Tom Schoz joined the band Freehold a year later in
1970. Barry Goudreau and Jim Masdea where part of the band and in the future they would be
members of Boston.
Scholz saved up money to build a recording studio in his basement and to record demos at
professional recording studios. The demos he recorded got rejected from all the record labels.
Scholz then created the band Mothers Milk in 1973 but they quickly broke up in 1974. Scholz
continued writing music, spent the last of his money, and made one last demo that took 6 years.
The Demo had six songs with Brad Delp on vocals, which were mostly recorded in his basement
studio. Scholz played all the instruments on the demos besides the drums by overdubbing. The
drums were played by Jim Masdea. The demo caught the attention of Paul Ahern, Charlie
Mckenzie, and Epic Records. After Masdea left the band Scholz and Delp signed with Epic
records and added two new members, bassist Frahn Sheehan and drummer Shib Hashian. The
band made a deal with Epic Records to release ten albums over the next six years.
Not only did the band Boston have an interesting start. The band was also very successful the
band has released six studio albums, one greatest hits album, and sold over 75 million records
worldwide. The band is a staple of American classic rock. According to BandBoston.com
Beethoven, Rachmonov, Chopin, Tchaikovsky, and Ravel had an influence on Toms music. On
August 25, 1976 Boston released their first album that was self-titled Boston was the most
successful album It sold over 17 million copies. It had the hit singles Peace of mind, More
Than a Feeling. And Long Time. The second album under Epic records Dont Look Back
was released in August 1978. Scholz felt the album release was rushed, but the album still ended
up selling seven million copies.\
Tom Scholz founded the company Scholz Research & Development Inc. in 1980 which was
very innovative and created a lot of new sound and effects. The company invented and released
the Rockman amplifier in 1982. The company used analog which became out dated to digital
effects. Scholz sold the Rockman line to Dunlop Manufacturing in 1995 and shut down SR&D.

In 1983, Yetnikoff of CBS filed a sixty million dollar lawsuit against Scholz for not releasing
albums in time. Scholz and Delp were working on the third album at this time and didnt want
the album to be rushed. The lawsuit took seven years and ended in April, 1990 with Scholz
winning and being awarded money from unpaid royalties and punitive damages. Scholz felt
betrayed by CBS and his band members. According to Scholz CBS, Fran Sheehan, and Sib
Hashian tried to kick him out of the band. He asserts they helped CBS testify against him. Scholz
stated, These guys come out of nowhere and got taught how to play the songs and theyre filthy
rich and now theyre suing?. They settled out of court. Boston left the CBS records after the
lawsuit and joined MCA records.

The third album Third Stage took over five years to complete and was released on
September 23, 1986 under MCA records. The first hit single Amanda was leaked two years
prior to the album release. The hit was Number one on Billboard. Boston released theyre fourth
album on June 7, 1994 under MCA records and sold over a million copies. In June 1997 Boston
released a greatest hits album titled Bostons Greatest Hits Under Epic and MCA records with
3 unheard recordings. The album has sold over two million copies. The Filth studio album
released under an independent label Artemis Records. The album is titled Corporate America
and has sold over 100,000 copies. Bostons sixth album was under another new record label
Frontiers Records. It is titled Life, Love, and Hope and was released on December 3, 2013.
Not only has Boston been successful they did it they have had to deal with adversity and band
members coming and going. The drummer Jim Masdea left the band before Scholz and Delp
signed to Epic records. Some say the label forced him to leave. Epic got two new members a
drummer Sib Hashian and bass guitarist Fran Sheehan. They were with the band for the first two
Albums then left the band during the CBS lawsuit and tried suing Scholz. Around this time Garry
Goudreau left the band and label and formed the band Orion The Hunter. Jim Masdea the
original drummer returned to the band and they added a new guitarist Gary phil for the third
album Third Stage. In 1990 Brad Delp leaves the band and joined Barry Goudreaus new and
RTZ. Scholz replaced Delp with Fran Cosmo who was the vocalist for Goudreaus previous band
Orion The Hunter. By the fourth album Walk On Scholz is the only original member and
now the band consist of members Tom Scholz, Fran Cosmo, Garry Pihl, David Sikes, Doug
Huffman, Matt Belyea, Bob Cedro, and Tommy Funderbur. Brad Delp returned to the band in
1995 and is on the fifth album Corporate America along with new members Anthony Cosmo,
Jeff Neal, Kimberly Dahme, Bill Ryan, Curly Smith,Charlie Farren, and Julia Van Daam. They
replaced Doug Huffman, Matt Belyea, Bob Cedro, and Tommy Funderburk. That would be the
last album Delp worked on because he committed suicide on March 9, 2007. The sixth album
Life, Love, and Hope would have another new line up of band members. Jeff Neals returned to
the band along with new members Tommy Decarlo, David Victor, Louise St. August, Beth
cohan, and Jude Nejmanowski. Tom Scholz, Kimberly Dahmn, and Gary Pihl were still in the
lineup as well. The late Brad delp was also featured on the album. The bands current members
are Tom Scholz, Garry Pihl, Curly Smith, Jeff Neal, Tommy DeCarlo, Beth Cohen and another
new member Tracy Ferrie. The band has had at least seven different lineups.
