Well Shannon I would love to tell you that what you said to close the last day
of class was very meaningful to me. I could not help but read and mention it once
more. You shared with us the last couple of sentences that are in the book which are
The study of human development is a science, with topics to be researched,
understood, and explained. But the process of living is an art as well as a science,
with strands of love and sorrow woven into each persons unique tapestry. Death,
when it leads to hope; dying, when it is accepted; and grief, when it fosters
affirmation-all add meaning to birth, growth, development, and love. (Berger598)
To this I would like to add that I find the perspective of the mind mysterious and
appealing. The way that the mind is tied to our emotions, compassion, mourning,
and love. The brain is so amazing, the way that it develops to help you understand
the everyday meaning of life. It is amazing that how the mind grows and develops
with time as we go through experiences in life that can determine our future and
who we become.
There was one lesson that I found very meaningful to me. The lesson about
The Psychology of Aging were the one that caught my attention the most. I know
that sounds weird because Im still a part of the emerging adulthood. It is just that I
think into the future. During this lesson I learned that there are different kinds of
myths about the aging people. A couple of those myths were; getting old is a dead
end for aging people, Decline in mental function, Old people are abandoned by their

families, Sexless, unproductive, burdensome, and needy. Most of these myths I
know that are definitely untrue. Like I remember Shannon that you missioned that
old people are staying less and less in nursing homes. I remember taking notes
about why people think about the aging people this way. I learned that some people
think that just because some old people do things and then whoever is a witness of
that thinks that all old people happen to be the exact same. Another reason for
these myths is that people confuse memory loss with slower processing.
During this Chapter of our lessons I know that you discussed the
Neurocognitive Disorders that occur among the aging peoples age. You talked
about Dementia the most. There were four major categories that we spoke about.
The four categories were Degenerative Neurological Disorder DOs, Vascular DOs,
Inherited DOs, and Infectious DOs. There were also lots of types of dementias that
were mentioned. I learned that the age of onset for this was dependent on etiology.
The highest prevalence was for people that were of the age 85+. Dementias are
very uncommon in children but it is possible. If the children are diagnosed with
dementia it is usually as a result of a primary medical condition.
Reflection
The reason that I chose this last chapter is because one of the most
important people in my life is actually going through this stage in life. My grandma
has been with me ever since the day that I was born. She has been with me through
thick and thin. When I was little my mother and father were always arguing and she
was the one that was there to distract me from everything bad that was happening
in the house.

When I became a teenager I went through a tough time moving from one
place to another. I got to the bad point to where I was hanging out with the wrong
people I began to skip school, drop my grades and worst almost went to jail. She
was there to straighten me up and make sure that I was getting back into track with
my smart self. I learned lots of lessons and now I have become the great person
that I am today. The reason why I loved this section was because I was able to
better understand what my loving mother was going through. She supported me
when I was going though very tough times and so now I believe that it is my turn to
make sure that she is living her last few years to the fullest.
