Abstract
Sexism has been a problem for many years and has caused in many athletics problems in
their daily lifes. Athletics who have gone through this situation have many ways to stand up for
themselves and others who have gone through the same problem. However, even if the player is
contious about the problem they still dont do anything about it because they are afraid of what
might happen if they stand up for what is right. This does not only affect their job but also
emotionally, financially, mentally, physically and stately. There is more probability that a female
is affected than that of a male since there is male dominance in many sports. Women are not
treated fairly because males believe that their comments and opinions on the sport isnt valid
because they are women and dont know what is correct.
Introduction
Sexism in sports has been around since sports were created. Many athletes who have
gone through this situation go through many emotional and financial problems. In some cases
athletes dont try standing up for themselves because they dont want to face the media and
possibly getting fire. The reason why sexism has still been present is because there is a
dominance of males on mostly all sports and the ones that have gone through a situation due to
sexism dont know how to approach the situation. Sexism can be prevented in many ways such
as organizations, facing the media and being truthful to themselves so that they can be treated
fair. For some it is difficult facing this problem because they are afraid of losing their job. In this
report it will cover sexism in sports, how it the media is a strong resource on sexism, sexism
facing the problem, and how it affects them emotionally, financially and physically.
media. (Media Coverage of Female Athletes. (n.d.). The media is the source that can tell the
public about their favorite player, comments and important information that they want to know.
However, the media can sometimes dont say what needs to be said and tell the public what they
want them to see about the athletes.
Sexism facing the problem
Most of the athletes who have faced sexism struggle with emotional problems and would
feel discourage about their job. When it becomes the main problem it can take over in many
situations such as, not paying attention or not giving their all to their job. Athletics that have
gone through this problem have also have to face the unfairness of pay check. (The Sport of
Sexism, by Eleanor Montgomery. (2015). Female players get pay less than that of males because
of the dominance of males. (Reckless Indifference. (2015). They also believe that women are not
that acknowledgeable towards sports so their opinion or comment are invalid for them. (Cherry,
M. (n.d.). Many players dont face the problem because they feel like if they say something they
think is wrong they will probably face the end of their career and others who know that is still
happing dont say anything because they are not the ones going through the situation. It
generates a concern for gender differences and stereotypes. (Sexism and Sports, Argument
Continues to Build (with image, tweets) graisinbrand. (n.d.). Women have also been criticize
because they believe they dont understand the rules of the sports and are not enough
acknowledgeable to be at a males standards. (Sexism gone too far in Sports: Where does it begin
and end? - Tribal Football. (n.d.).
There are
many ways on facing the problem such as organizations for equal opportunities,
media telling the truth behind the courts, standing up for themselves. (Gender
Discrimination in Sports. (2013). Most women dont grow in tuff situations or in
hard work standards than men do when they are raised. They are treated softer
than men because of the demand that women dont basically have. That shouldnt
mean that a women doesnt have the guts to show their strength and intellect that
a guy has. A women is basically the same as a mens body we are all equal in
proportion. Its up to us on what we desire to do and to stand for. Our standards
can be changed by limitations on physical and mental preparation.
