Juan Crisostomo Ibarra y Magsalin: he is the rich and sought-after Tlustrado who is introduced as the European-educated Filipino who has just arrived from his studies.He values the education of his countrymen, as evidenced by his passion for the school building in San Diego. He is the ideal protagonist, someone patriotic, and liberty-loving. Padre Damaso: he is the one who is primarily opposed to Ibarra and his liberal ideas. Elias: he is the common person who experiences the hardships of those who are not as privileged as the families of Ibarra and Maria Clara. He is brave and humble, the one who ‘helped Marra until the end. He does not like authorities who use their power to terrorize people like him. Because of this, his relationship with the guardia civil is a rough one. 4 Don Rafael Ibarra: Crisostomo’s father who is a rich landlord, He represents the people who believe in the law, as he stands by it and has a strong sense of justice. It was because Of this that he was put to jail, after he defended a young boy from a violent tax-collector. S. Capitan Tiago: he represents the Filipinos then who were obedient to the whims of the ‘Spanish so that everything will be well with him and his family. He is portrayed as a religious person who wants to please those around him, especially those who hold high Positions. 6 Maria Clara: she is what came to be the ideal Filipina woman; beautiful, reserved, Pious, obedient, and selfless. 7. Dona Victorina de los Reyes de Espadana: she is the epitome of colonial mentality. ‘Though being Filipino, she acts as if she isn’t and imitates what is Spanish. Her lack of national sentiment is ‘8. Sisa: she represents the people who are persecuted by the Spanish. She is also seen as a caring mother (0 her sons, a submissive wife, the usual image of a Filipina mower. She was said to be named after Rizal's older sister, Narcisa, who was the first to get married, among their siblings. 9. Tasio, Don Anastacio: Tasio is the only one that Crisostomo Ibarra can talk to as he is. ‘Someone who holds ideas which his generation cannot understand. er B. Plot ‘The main character of the novel, Juan Crisostomo Magsalin Ibarra, returns to the Philippines after living ‘abroad for a few years to complete his studies. Upon his arrival, a party is thrown for him by Kapitan Tiago and he is also greeted by other important people in society. ‘The following day, Ibarra meets up with Maria Clara and from that meeting, itis noticeable how much the ‘wo love each other. Ibarra then learns about his father’s history and how much Padre Damaso despises his actions, From then on, Padre Damaso never liked Ibarra and he would insult him nonstop but Ibarra did not plan on seeking revenge. Instead, he decided to pursue his father’s ambitions by putting up 2 school. ‘After the successful inauguration of his school, Ibarra held a luncheon in which Padre Damaso attended but ‘was not invited. With that, he continued to insult Ibarra until Ibarra had enough and planned on killing him and he also told the other people in attendance the truth about the friars and their evil doings.
