Artistic Artifact Reflection (Know, Do, Reflect)

Complete the KDR graphic organizer below with comprehensive thoughts. Each section should consist of
1-2 detailed, thorough paragraphs that showcase what you KNOW, what you can DO, and your
REFLECTION on your project. The boxes will grow as you type.
KNOW:

Explain the goal or

objective of the course,
the artistic
project/assignment, and
how it helped you meet
that goal/objective

Discuss what you

needed to know in
order to complete the
artistic
project/assignment
effectively and
proficiently, as well as
discussing what you
LEARNED upon
completing it.

For my Artistic Artifact I have chosen a slam poem I wrote for the Spring
Arts Academy Project. This project was a bonding experience for the
academy and gave people a place to share their experiences. The goal was
to write five slam poems with your project group. We presented most of
our five poems to the whole academy in a double elimination competition.
We had to do two group poems and the other three could be anything we
wanted. I chose to write a slam poem about mental illness and my
struggle with mental illness. My goal was to show people how it felt on the
inside and the thoughts I think with mental illness. I hoped people would
realize that mental illness is a real thing and a struggle people deal with
everyday. I had to know what mental illness was like when I was writing
this poem and I took notes Ive written in my journal during rough times
and put them into my poem. Performing this slam poem was one of the
hardest things I have ever done and I was shaking the whole entire time.
After performing this poem I learned that more people then I thought are
supportive of mental illness. I got nothing but good comments on the
poem and it made me feel better about myself and my writing abilities.

DO:
Discuss the process of
what you actually did
in order to complete
your artistic
project/assignment
and what you can do
as a result
o Think - because I
know (this) I can
now do (this)
Discuss new
technologies used, new
subject matter
encountered, new
skills learned or skills
that were improved,
etc. as you worked
through your project.

In order to complete the project I had to watch a lot of slam poem videos
to better understand slam poems. I had never written a slam poem before
and didn't really understand the concept as well as I could have. I spent
hours watching slam poems one night about mental illness and about tons
of other topics. I would write down lines I thought of about my feeling into
my journal and decided I would later compile all of these into my slam
poem. The technique I used to write my slam poem is completely different
then the technique I used for writing my songs. As I worked through my
project I developed new writing techniques and better knowledge about
slam poetry.

REFLECT: Reflect on the

process of completing the
project/assignment (both
steps taken and
knowledge and
experience gained).
What went well? Why?
What could have gone
better? How could you
have improved it?
How have you
demonstrated growth
in your knowledge and
skills as a student & in
this artform as a result
of working through the
project/assignment?
Describe why & how
this particular
project/assignment
was impactful on your
tenure as a student in
the Arts Academy?

The reason I chose this project to write my know, do, reflect on is because
of the experience and technique I gained when writing my slam poem.
This will help me in college when writing songs. I think the whole process
of writing the slam poem went smoothly. I got the poem done on time and
it was memorized by the time I had to preform. I wish that I hadn't spent
so much time preparing and spent more time writing the poem. I wrote
the poem in two days and I feel as though it would have been better and
longer if I had spent more time. Although I was proud of the outcome, I
wish I had a bit more time. I think I should have added more metaphors
and changed around the words a bit to make it more abstract because a
lot of the slam poems I enjoyed were like that. As a result of this project I
think I have developed better leadership and teamwork skills with
working on the other poems and sharing my poem. I felt supported and I
supported my group as much as possible. This was the first time I have
ever stepped up and led a group by myself and it was challenging and
stressful, but I am glad I did it.
