Activity Title:
Main concept, Goal of Activity: The children will gain an understanding of galaxies.
Objective 1: The children will engage in a storytelling experience about galaxies.
Objective 2: The children will gain an understanding of galaxies through the use of
the book Out in Space by Melvin Berger.
Objective 3: The children will gain cooperation skills by working together to make
galaxy playdough.

Materials or Equipment Needed:


9 cups of flour
3 cups salt
3 tbsp oil
3 cup water
food coloring (black)
The book Out in Space by Melvin Berger
Prior to Lesson:
Collect all items needed.
Try to make playdough to make sure the recipe works.

Motivation What will you do to attract or motivate the children?


I will introduce the book Out in Space by Melvin Berger. I will ask the children:
1. When you look up in the sky at night what do you see?
2.What do you know about the stars at night?
3. What about the moon? Do you remember what we talked about on Tuesday?
Directions/ Explanations/Steps
1.I will read the book Out in Space by Melvin Berger.
2. I will ask the children questions during the book like Did you know the sun is a star? and
Look at the moon, what phase is it in? and Look at the different planets. Do you see the size
difference? Which one is the biggest?.
3. After the book, I will ask the children more questions, like Which planet would you go too?,
and Look at all the stars in the galaxies. Do you remember which galaxy we are in?.
4.I will have 4 children in the kitchen with me to make the playdough.
5.I will introduce the activity to the children of making galaxy playdough.
6. The children will take turns adding the ingredients to the bowl, I will announce how much of
each item every time.
7. The first child will add the first cup of flour.
8.The next child will add the other cup of flour.
9. The next child adds one cup of salt.
10.The next child will add one tablespoon on oil.
11.I will add the black dye to the bowl.
12.I will give each child a packet of glitter and they will add it to the bowl.
13.I will mix the ingredients together in the bowl.
14. The children will be able to look at the playdough.
15. I will ask the children what the sparkles represents in the playdough (stars).
16.The children will be able to play with the playdough.
Conclusion: What will you do to conclude your lesson?
The children will bag their playdough to bring home with them.

Evaluation:
1. Did the children engage in the book Out in Space by Melvin Berger?
2. Did the children gain an understanding of galaxies?
3. Did the children cooperate with the others to make the playdough?
