Love
In the novel, Everyday by David Levithan, the protagonist in the story named A
changes bodies everyday. A is a soul who lives through other peoples lives but always tries to
carry out a normal day in the bodys life that A is in. One day A came across a girl name
Rhiannon and completely fell in love with her. A makes the impossible, possible to form a
relationship with her despite the difficult circumstances that stand against their relationship. As
perspective on love is formed through appearances, personalities, and challenges. These play a
role in As love life A learns and experiences each of these throughout the relationship A formed
with Rhiannon.
In the beginning of the novel, A did not believe in any form of relationship or love. A had
once claimed to be in love, but denied it quickly afterwards and never had the thought of it ever
again. A did not understand his purpose for his soul living in different bodies everyday and
because of that, he was not able to love himself or herself. He/she did not have a true gender
identity because he was able to live in both male and females bodies. A never understood why
his/her life had to be in this form and tried to come to an understanding with a purpose, but never
could. That all changes when A meets someone that would become important to him/her.

One morning, A wakes up in a boys body named Justin. He learns about his life and tries
to carry out a normal day in Justins life until he gets to his high school and meets Justins
girlfriend, Rhiannon. He learns how Justin treats Rhiannon, which is unfair and he has the choice
to connect or disconnect. Although, A never connects with people, A takes a chance because
there is something about Rhiannon that had gotten his/her attention. In the article, Self Identity
and Culture by Ronald Jackson, Cerise Glen and Kesha Williams, Understanding how you
learn to define and communicate your sense of self is critical to promoting understanding of your
own and other cultural identities.(118) As A spends the day with Rhiannon, A steps out of his/
her comfort zone and A begins to learn more about itself and reflect its true self the more he
spends time with her. Towards the end of the day A feels a connection with Rhiannon and
decides to form a relationship and learn more about her.
As Rhiannon learns about A and how he/she changes bodies everyday, she learns that
appearance will be a factor to carry out this unique relationship. For instance, A had woken up in
a females body and when they tried to be intimate and perform an innocent kiss, Rhiannon was
not able to agree to it. She said, This s definitely weirdWhy? Because youre a girl? (132)
Rhiannon is uncomfortable that A is in a females body because she only has an attraction to
males and even though she knows A is in the females body she is not able to treat A like her
boyfriend. Appearance had become a burden into this relationship and this had become a
problem that neither one was able to control a regular relationship.
As Rhiannon and A continue their relationship, A begins to notice that coming to find
Rhiannon everyday becomes more difficult when distance starts to become an issue. A wakes up

in a boy name Nathan and A finds out that he/she is a couple hours away from Rhiannon. This is
when A starts to make unthinkable decisions and will do anything to see her. A drives a couple
hours to see her without thinking of the problems his actions can make. Towards the end of the
night on his/her way back to Nathans home, the clock strikes twelve and becomes too late for A
to get Nathan back home and leaves his body on the road in the middle of nowhere. A had to
suffer consequences and because of this situation A not only affected itself but as well as Nathan
and the people around him. As actions went against its values and morals by breaking its own
rules of persons body A was in. It then slowly starts to see how more complicated this
relationship will get, mainly because he will never know what body, how far A will be in and
knows that if he went against his values this time it can happen again more than once.
As actions that it has taken for Rhiannon are taken for mainly one reason, the love it
grew for her. In the article, Self Identity and Culture it is said that, People use symbols to
represent meaning that are relevant to their experiences. Consider for a moment how you would
explain love, freedom (123) Although A committed an unthinkable and careless decision it
was proving itself how much love and care it had created for Rhiannon. A has never experienced
such a strong love and attraction for someone until it had met Rhiannon and is willing to do
about almost anything to keep what Rhiannon and A have between each other despite the
obstacles and circumstances they are in. A has never felt close to normal and in continuing to
keep this relationship as normal as possible it gives A a chance into feeling as a true and real
person. Not only that, but also feeling as if it has a purpose in life for making someone happy,

feeling loved and being treated as they should be. A wants to believe that the love Rhiannon and
A created will be strong enough to overcome everything and conquer all.
