Myexperienceasaneducatormayseemlikeashorttenuretosome,butithas
beenafullygratifyingexperiencethusfar.IgraduatedfromChamplainCollegeinMay
of2012withadegreeinEducation.Imovedhomeandwasimmediatelyofferedalong
termsubstitutepositionattheschoolIgraduatedfromandhadbeensubbingfor,State
StreetSchool.Iwasofferedthefirstgradepositionforthelasttwomonthsofschoolas
theteacherhadbeenoutmostoftheyearwithastringoflongtermsubstitutes.Iwas
young,beyondexcited,andverynervous,buthappytoprovidesomeconsistencyfor
thepoorstudents!
Thispositionwasonlyfortwomonths,however,thefollowingfallIwasoffereda
longtermsubstitutepositioninafourthgradeclassroom.Itaughtinaselfcontained
classroomforateacherwhowentoutonleaveattheendofSeptember.Iwas
eventuallyofferedacontracttobeafourthgradeteacherforthisclassroomandIhave
sincebeenteachingfourthgrade,here,atStateStreetSchool.
Myschooldepartmentalizedintoreading/socialstudiesormath/scienceteaching
assignmentsforthe20142015schoolyear.Iwasfortunateenoughtobeaskedto
teachreadingandsocialstudies.Thisschoolyear,werecentlyadoptedanew
curriculumthatallowsteachersagreatdealofchoiceintheirmaterials,whileguidingus
withessentialquestionsandthemes.Ihavebeenveryopentothenewcurriculumand
havetriedmybesttobaseitaroundmycurrentstudentsinterestswhilestickingtothe
themesandessentialquestions.
Ialsorecentlytookituponmyselftoaskourdistrictforawordworkprogramand
withtheassistanceofourreadingcoach,wecreatedawordworkblockinmy

.Thisschoolyear,Ialsopilotedusingthe
FountasandPinnelllevelingsystemformystudentsaswellasthecurrentthirdgraders.
OurschoolhasnowadopteditandhasorderedkitsforallofK6fornextyear.Iam
proudofbothoftheseaccomplishments,asIsawthedesperateneedforuniformity
withinmyschoolandtookituponmyselftofindasolution.
Ilovereadingandhavealwayshadapassionforreadinginmypersonallife
whichIfeelhelpsmeasareadingteacher.Ihavetaken,anddonewellwith,four
graduatecreditclassessofarinmycareer.Ineachoftheclasses,Ihavetakenaway
veryusefulinformationandstrategiesthatIhavethenusedinmyclassroom.Itooka
classonAutismSpectrumDisordertheyearIhadastudentwithAutismandittruly
helpedmebetterunderstandthewayherbrainworksandwhatIcoulddoinmy
classroomtohelpher.Ihavealsotakencoursesonbehavior,literacyinthetwentyfirst
century,andIamcurrentlyenrolledinacourseonreading,datacollection,and
assessment.
Iwouldlovetoeventuallybecomemyschoolsreadingcoachandreading
interventionist.Iwanttohelpotherteacherswithournewcurriculumandtofindbetter
waystomakethecurriculumworkwithintheirclassroom.Ilovedoingbookclubswith
mystudentsandfindingwaystomakethecurriculumworkwithinmyclassroombased
ontheinterestsofmystudents.Ialsowanttohavetheabilitytoreachmanystudents
andtohelpthosestudentscreateandcultivatealoveforreadingandstrengthentheir
foundationalskills.Ihopemyfuturegraduatestudiesassistmeinbecomingastronger,
