Basic Volleyball Skills Underhand and Overhand Serve
P: Given a volleyball, net, and instruction on proper form, 8th grade physical education (PE) students will be able to
underhand serve with correct form at least 5 times, as observed by the physical educator.
P: Given a volleyball, net, and instruction on proper form, 8th grade physical education (PE) students will be able to
overhand serve with correct at least 5 times, as observed by the physical educator.
C: Given instruction on the cues, 8th grade PE students will be able to explain the purpose of step with opposite
foot of striking arm prior to contact with 80 percent accuracy, as observed by the physical educator.

A: Given instruction on positive feedback, 8th grade PE students will give positive feedback to classmates for
executing successful underhand or overhand serves at least 5 times, as observed by the physical educator.
Given previous knowledge, a projector, and access to YouTube volleyball clip, 8th grade PE students will be able
to identify and describe the skills used in the YouTube volleyball video with 80 percent accuracy, as observed by
the physical educator.
Standard 1: The physically literate individual demonstrates competency in a variety of motor skills and movement
patterns.

Partner Underhand Serving


Activity

*Discuss how a volleyball game is


started which will lead into to the
lesson.
Explain the cues and demonstrate an
underhand serve.

*Students will peer up with a partner


and stand directly across the net from
each other. All students will stand on
the half court on their respective
sides. Make sure to have students
spread out to allow more room and
with their partner, they will underhand
serve directly to each other for 4
minutes. Emphasize to students that
underhand serving isnt about hitting
it the farthest, but accuracy and
placement.
*Let students know they will be
assess on giving positive feedback to
classmates for good performances.
*For 5 minutes into the activity, blow
the whistle and tell all students to take
2 step back to increase the distance
between them.
*About another 5 minutes, have the
students take 3 steps back and
continue underhand serving.
*The physical educator will observe,
informal assess, and reinforce proper
form as needed.

Overhand Serving Activity


- Overhand throw

*Demonstrate an overhand throw.


(Throwing the ball will help students
get the feel of executing the cues)
*With the same partner, students will
stand directly across the net from each
other. All students will stand on the
half court on their respective sides
and spread themselves out. With their
partner, they will overhand throw the
ball over the net directly to each other
for 1 minute. The other partner will
retrieve/catch the ball and execute an
overhand throw back.

*After 1 minutes, blow the whistle


and tell all students to move to the
back court line from half court. This
will increase the distance between
them.
With the same partner, students will
line up directly across from their
partner. One will stand directly behind
the volleyball back court line as other
will do the same on the opposite side.
Make sure to spread out the students.
