The Nitrogen family,

Group 15
Names: Tess Anderson

Nitrogen(N)

Colorless, Tasteless, and odorless.

Discovered By: Daniel Buther Ford
Atomic number:7
Atomic mass:14.01
Melting point: -209.86
Classification: Nonmetal

Nitrogen(N)
Doesnt react to many things.
Used in food storage to keep
packaged or bulk foods fresh.
Used as an alternative to carbon
dioxide.
Nitrous Oxide is laughing gas
Was sometimes referred to as
burnt air.

Antimony (Sb)

Silvery white
Atomic number:51
Atomic Mass:121.76
Melting point: 630.5
Classification: Metalloid
Reacts to : fluorine, chlorine, or bromine
Rare element but can sometimes be found naturally.
Used in Batteries, low friction metals, and tracer bullets.
Common uses: Flame Proofing, Paints, ceramics, electronics,
matches
Reacts with fluorine, Chlorine, Bromine
Will burn in air
Was used as eye makeup

Antimony (Sb)
Used in Batteries, low friction metals,
and tracer bullets.
Common uses: Flame Proofing,
Paints, ceramics, electronics,
matches
Reacts with fluorine, Chlorine,
Bromine
Will burn in air
Was used as eye makeup

Bismuth (Bi)

Color: silver-white
Discovered by: Claude Francois Geoffroy
Atomic Number:83
Atomic Mass:208.98
Melting point: 271.3
Classification: Metal
Reacts with: Air, Water, halogens, acids
Twice as abundant as gold
Only mercury has a lower thermal conductivity

Bismuth(Bi)
Bismuth was among the first group of ten
metals to be discovered and classified
one of the lowest levels of thermal
conductivity.
one of only a few elements whose liquid state
has a higher density than its solid state.
China, Peru, and Mexico are the major
suppliers of bismuth
one of the lowest levels of thermal
conductivity.

Arsenic (As)
Color: Commonly in Gray, Yellow, and
Black
Discovered by: Albertus Magnus
Atomic Number:33
Atomic Mass:74.92
Melting point:817
Classification: Metalloid

Arsenic (As)
Yellow arsenic is the most poisonous
form.
Its toxicity is actually beneficial in
fighting fungus, bacteria, and insects
in wood Preservation.
Used in medical purposes, including
skin bleaching agent, a cancer
treatment, and an early syphilis cure.
33 radioactive isotopes have been
produced.

Phosphorus (P)
Color: Sometimes is can be Yellow,
Red, Violet, and Black.
Discovered by: Henning Brand
Atomic Number:15
Atomic number:30.97
Melting point:44.1
11th most abundant element.

Phosphorus (P)
Classification: Nonmetal
Sometimes referred to as the Devils
Element, because of its explosive
properties.
Part of DNA, RNA, ATP, and cell
membranes.
Used in detergents and pesticides.
Usually a waxy white solid

About the group

All Solid at room temperature besides Nitrogen

Ionization energy decreases down the group.
Atomic radius increases in size down the group.
Melting point increases down the group.
Boiling point increases down the group.
Electronegativity decreases down the group.
Often form covalent compounds usually with the
oxidation numbers +3 or +5
Nitrogen and phosphorus are nonmetals. Arsenic
and antimony are metalloids. Bismuth is a metal.

About the group

The nitrogen elements have, perhaps, the
widest range in physical state of any group in
the periodic table.
Together with carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and
sulfur, the first two members of this group,
nitrogen and phosphorus, are the principal
chemical elements incorporated into living
systems.
Antimony (Sb) was probably the first of the
obtained in elemental form and recognized as
an element..
