THE
COLONIAL
ERA

BECCA HARBIN

Mercantilism was a popular mindset

among the people in Colonial
America. It helped keep their
economy strong and flourishing.
Limits were produced on how much
money a colony could spend, what
they spent it on, and who they traded
with. This made it so the mother
country always had enough money
and equal investments from each of
the smaller colonies. Laws such as
the Sugar acts and Navigation acts
helped make sure that the colonies
could only travel so far, trade with
certain people, and spend a specific
amount of money.

Bacons rebellion has a multitude of

starting factors, and there cannot be one
single cause. Starting with an excess of
economic issues: the price of tobacco was
plummeting, Commercial competition
grew as the Carolinas and Maryland
arose in power, The market was
restricted from almost any aspect, and a
huge amount of inflation caused by the
growing popularity of Mercantilism.
There were, at the time, also a large
amount of weather-caused challenges.
Needless to say, the colonists had a
pretty rough year. They all needed
someone to blame for their losses and
frustration, so they took it upon
themselves to blame the indians. This
caused uprisings all over between
indians and colonists, which soon came
to be known as: Bacons Rebellion.

The Great Awakening was a

time of religious realization and
reformation among the colonists.
This was started and spread by an
English evangelical man named
George Whitefield. The religious
role was slowly diminishing from
the lives of the colonists. There
was a New Light among the
colonists that sparked rebellion,
new interests and new beliefs.
This was a long term cause of the
revolution and this upheaval had
strict political consequences
among the colonies.

The Iroquois confederacy of Native

American Tribes, also known as The
Iroquois league or Five Nations was
a group or team of 5 tribes. The
confederacy consisted of the
Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga,
Cayuga, and Seneca tribes. These
people inhabited from Albany, New
York all the way through the great
lakes into Canada and into
Wisconsin. This confederacy of
tribes provides many democratic
and beneficial ideas and pursuits.

The creation of large cash crops in

the Americas brought a large need
for more working hands. By the
middle of the 17th century the slave
trading industry was at its peak
point, with slaves at an estimated 7
million taken from Africa. When
colonists didnt have to be out in the
fields tending to their indigo, rice,
tobacco, coee, cocoa, and cotton
crops there was more time for
innovations and opportunists to
explore more ideas. Slave traders
made large fortunes for their
families and family trees.
