Dear Gov. McCrory,
I am writing to you on behalf of my fellow classmates here at UNC Charlotte. I am an Environmental Sciences major here, and as such the topics of sustainability and environmental protection are issues that are quite close to my heart. We feel very strongly that the laws in North Carolina have created an environment in which it is very hard for people to pursue a more sustainable existence. One of the most flagrant examples of this is the states ban on third party sales of photovoltaic cells. It would appear that the state government has permitted the likes of Duke Energy to play a very obstructionist role in the future of solar energy in our state. The current ban on third parties entering into Power Purchase Agreements with consumers does nothing but create a monopoly on the sector for Duke Energy. This leads to a situation in which the consumer is forced to pay significantly higher out of pocket rates that, for many, rule out the option of solar energy. I urge you to reconsider and to make the sustainable energy market a level playing field, which will benefit both the people of North Carolina, and local businesses. If no action is taken to rectify this situation, I fear that we, as a state, will not progress into this new era of renewable energy quickly enough. Climate change is an issue that has been ignored for too long and, without doing everything we can in order to reverse the damage, has the potential to permanently devastate our world. Please, do your part. Sincerely, Your constituents
