cultural and artistic information about their chosen culture.
Students will view artwork, images, designs, and patterns
typical to their culture
Print 10 designs motifs, patterns, or images typical to your chosen culture.
Choose 4 of your images and print those 4 a second time. Attach to review
sheets. Complete review of images using the review sheets.
Use motifs, images, and/or patterns to design your own original sgraffito
composition. (25 points)
Complete packet (50 points)
A. Write a one page paper (3 paragraphs) about your culture and how you
incorporated it into your project. (60 points)
B. Create a 10 slide minimum power point about your culture following
outline

Sgraffito Project

DEFINITION:
Sgraffito is the cutting through one color layer to reveal the color
below.
OBJECTIVE:
Construct 1large piece minimum of 10 high or 10 in diameter or
multiple smaller pieces in method of students choice:
Smooth coil, wheel, drape, slab, combo
Surface design is to be done in the sgraffito method.

Overall pot design should satisfy the 3 second rule and incorporate
the elements and principles of design.

SKETCHBOOK REQUIREMENT:
Minimum of 10 different ideas for pot form.
Minimum of 10 design motifs from your chosen culture to consider
for surface design.

1 Final sketch= redraw your chosen form.

Show the designs/patterns planned out exactly.
All areas to sgraffito are drawn in and neatly
shaded/colored.
CONSTRUCTION METHODS:
Smooth coil, slab, drape/slump, wheel, combo

DIRECTIONS:
-Sketch ideas
-Conference for approval and troubleshooting
-Construct piece
-Dry to leather hard NO FURTHER
-Choose an underglaze color
-Apply 3 even coats, drying between each layer
-Store in CLEAN bag
-Create stencils/templates of chosen designs and/or patterns
-Lay out on vessel using measuring tape or ruler as
applicable
-Transfer design to surface
-Carefully, plan areas of color to be removed! Whether you
will be removing positive areas or negative areas.
-Color areas to be removed on your final sketch.
-Use sgraffito tools to remove color areas
-touch up chips with color
-Clean-up all edges
-Dry and fire
-Glaze with superclear
