COMPETENCY

REFLECTION
Denise Hernandez

Competency 001
The principal knows how to shape campus culture by facilitating the development, articulation, implementation,
and stewardship of a vision of learning that is shared and supported by the school community.

Building relationships with parents is the most


successful form for all students to be successful.
Parents are the foundation for their childs education
and it is important we built that report with them.
Through my projects, I was able to communicate
with parents and keep them updated of the events
happening on our campus.
Through starting a fundraising project, I was able to
work with my colleagues to create a community
event that included the staff, parents, and students
of our campus.

Competency 002
The principal knows how to communicate and collaborate with all members
of the school community, respond to diverse interests and needs, and
mobilize resources to promote student success.

Through my internship I was able to work with teachers and


collaborate with them for the well being of the students and
community.
I was able to work with different personalities and find ways
to accommodate the importance of why we were doing
what we needed to. Through my internship, I have learned
how to listen better and respond to diverse needs
effectively.
Due to my projects, I was able to organize responsibilities
such as staffing duties, mapping, concession sales, soccer
and talent show. Through this opportunity, I learned to pay
attention to small details, making quick decisions,
delegating task, and maintaining a clear and open lines of
communication.

Competency 003
The principal knows how to act with integrity, fairness, and in an ethical and legal
manner.

I cant express how important it is to make sure


every person is treated in an ethical manner with
fairness and integrity.
In my current role, I have the opportunity to
make decisions concerning discipline matters. It
is important to know and understand district
policies before giving any kind of discipline.
I was able to speak to parents and learn from my
principal that it is important to be fair and
consistent.

Competency 004
The principal knows how to facilitate the design and implementation of curricula and strategic plans
that enhance teaching andlearning; ensuring alignment ofcurriculum, instruction, resources, and
assessment; and promote the use of varied assessments to measure student performance.

As the reading coach of my elementary campus, I have gone


to trainings and worked with our other reading coach to
deliver instruction looking at data to help our teachers
instruct our students better.
I was able to look at new reading assessment programs
compared to what we are currently using, and discuss the
benefits with my principal.
In the near future, I wish to help and be in the curriculum
planning and scope out receive more professional
development opportunities to better prepare myself in
different areas of the curriculum, not just reading and
Language.

Competency 005

The principal knows how to advocate, nurture, and sustain an instructional program and a campus
culturethat are conducive to student learning and staff professional growth.

As having different roles on our campus:


teacher, reading coach, and disciplinarian,
I have been able to observe and conduct
feedback to teachers in order to
implement campus expectations.
As a leader, it is important to know your
teachers and their way of communicating
so you can reach of them and make sure
everyone understands the vision.

Competency 006

The principal knows how to implement a staff evaluation and development system to improve theperformance of
allstaff members,select and implementappropriatemodels for supervision and staffdevelopment, and apply legal
requirements for personnel management.

I was scheduled to be trained in PDAS, but since they


changed it to T-TESS, I am now on the schedule to be
trained in August.
I was able to assess five teachers PDAS along with my
principal to understand what to look for and what the
expectations are.
It is important to collaborate and understand the
needs of your teachers in order to provide tools and
trainings they need in order to be an effective
teacher. This is one are I am able to say my principal
has modeled very well. She is all about the students
and what the teachers need to make them successful.

Competency 007

The principal knows how toapply organizational, decision-making, and problem-solving skills to ensure
an effective learning environment.

Through my internship, I was able to structure


and give suggestions to teachers of how to be
more effective and I was able to model for them
our reading curriculum.
I was also able to work with my strong teachers
and pair them up with one who needed a little
more guidance, and they observed each other
as often as they needed. This was a mentorship.
I was a mentor for two of new teachers and
guided them through our curriculum, scope and
sequence, and observations of teachers.

Competency 008

The principal knows how toapply principles of effective leadership and management in relation to
campusbudgeting, personnel, resource utilization, financial management, and technology use.

The majority of the budget is spent on


teacher payroll which is allocated by the
district.
Ser Nios Charter School is a Title 1
school, so there are certain funds we
receive for tutoring, materials, Saturday
tutoring, and after school programs to
help our students. I will be able to work
closer with my principal this next calendar
year since I will be her assistant principal
to be more familiar with the budget.

Competency 009

The principal knows how toapply principles of leadership and management to thecampus physical
planand support systems to ensure a safe and effective learning environment.

It is essential that every student and staff member is


safe. I was involved and worked along my principal
on the procedures of a fire drill and review the drills
in case of an emergency.
I worked with our safety coordinator and how she
created ways for teachers help our students be safe.
We have a system when anything needs to be
repaired, we have a form that is filled out and it is
given to our administrator and taken to the principal
so it can be fixed. For example; the equipment on the
playground. The turn around time is usually within a
week.
