The area of leadership is one of the most

researched topics in organized psychology.
(page 132, paragraph 1)

Honestly did not expect leadership to be

widely researched among professors.

However, dissatisfaction with the results

obtained during the use of this approach
(page 132, paragraph 3)

I can understand how researching leadership

could be difficult because everyone is
different and every leader has different
qualities.

While the trait, behavioral and situational

theories formed the basis for leadership
research in general, they also formed the
supporting structure for athletic-based
research. (page 132, paragraph 5)

Im glad the researchers in this article started

to finally research about athletic leadership
because that is a different aspect than just
regular leadership.

A major breakthrough in sport leadership

research theory occurred in 1978 with the
development of the Multidimensional Theory
of Sports Leadership (Chelladurai &
Carron). This theory is sport-specific and
provides the framework for the study of
leadership in an athletic environment. (page
132, paragraph 6)

I do not know how reliable the

Multidimensional theory is because I believe
that there is no test to see if one is a leader ro
not. You just have to have that leadership
quality in you.

Some researchers have claimed that

I agree with this to some extent because
traditional coaching practices and values are some coaching strategies involve militarizing
dehumanizing and that coaches themselves their players and make them push their limits

are insensitive and autocratic. (page 133,

paragraph 4)

too far.

Herseys and Blanchards (1969; 1977)

Situational Leadership Theory focuses on
adapting specific leadership behaviors to the
maturity of group members. (page 133,
paragraph 7)

This theory sounds more reliable because if a

team is acting mature, that means they
should have good leadership because of their
good behavior.

The Leadership Scale for Sports is the

result of two development efforts and is
comprised of three 40-item scales that
address five dimensions of leader behavior
based on each of the following scenarios: a)
the preferences of athletes for specific leader
behavior, b) athletes perception of a coachs
behavior and c) coachs perception of his/her
own behavior. (page 134-135, paragraph 6)

I think this leadership scale gives a good

general idea to see if a team shows
leadership but it does not seem right to base
a teams leadership off of a scale.

The Leadership Scale for Sports measures

five leader behavior dimensions: training
and instruction, democratic style, autocratic
style, social support behavior and rewarding
behavior. (page 135, paragraph 2)

The leadership scale seems to go more in

depth and shows the main points of
successful leadership in a team.

A. This Article talks about the research done for leadership in sports by many credible
researchers. The research done was difficult at first because no body really knew how to
research leadership in an effective way. Later, the development of the Multidimensional
Theory of Sports Leadership was made to give a starting point for athletic leadership
research. The article then goes into detail about how leadership in sports can be affected
by behaviors from the coaching staff and athletes on the teams. This theory of studying
behaviors on teams was known as the Situational Leadership Theory. This theory
specifies certain maturity on teams and how this maturity level effects leadership.
