L-2-1 Demonstrate knowledge and ability to adapt nursing assessment,

care, health teaching and coaching in care of pediatric client.

Throughout pediatrics we develop a knowledge on not only a general

understanding of the medical issues that occur frequently in pediatric
patients, but also how to address the children, and how to offer the
caregiver with comfort, and knowledge about the care their child will
receive. Specifically throughout lectures we discussed the different
stages children are at, and how to address their specific learning abilities.
We continue to include the developmental theories of Erikson, Kohlberg,
and Piaget. Having knowledge of these will assist me in adapting my
care plan as it will allow me to assess what stages the child is in, and
what kinds of relationship they have with their caregiver.

Having the knowledge that has been discussed in these lecture will allow
me to adapt my care for my pediatric patients as I will be able to assess

In this competency I would rate myself as fair. Having only worked in a

health care setting in areas not including a pediatric component, or their
families I do not have the clinical knowledge on how to adjust my care
when providing it for a pediatric client. However I do have history of
coaching sports to young children, as well as volunteering in classrooms
for children with mental disabilities. I believe that having these
experiences have allowed me to develop a knowledge on how to
communicate with the child so that they are able to comprehend what is
going on around them. I also feel that I am able to communicate with the
parents or caregivers offering them comfort. I think that having a history
of being around children and developing how to openly communicate
with all that are involved will allow me to adapt my care to suit the
situation.

Assignment 2

I will adapt my future care for each pediatric patient that I have, by
assessing them and how they as well as their care giver are responding to
the environment, as well as assessing what stage of development they
are at. By doing this I will better my care for each family to
accommodate it to their specific needs. I hope that this will provide them
with comfort in my ability to care for their loved one. As I develop my
ability to care for pediatric patients these skills will become better, and I
will improve my proficiency.
