Hypothesis
:Theshreddedpaperwilldothebestjobkeepingintheheatbecauseoftheair
pocketsbetweenthepapers.Thesandwillprobablysapalloftheheatoutofthewater,butthe
shreddedpaperhasalotofairthatwillkeeptheheatinwithoutabsorbingit.
Bothheatandcold
arerestrictedintheirabilitytopassthroughthismixofpaperandair,mostlybythesizeofthe
airspaces.Thesmallertheairspaces,thebettertheinsulation.

AnalysisQuestions
:
1. Anothergroupalsousedsandandairtodetermineifitwaseffectiveifitwereusedasan
insulator.Basedonbothofourfindings,itissafetosaythatairwasthemosteffective
insulatorhowever,ourfindingsalonewoulddemonstratethatshreddedpaperfunctions
thebestasaninsulator.Theshreddedpaperseffectivenessasaninsulatorwas
demonstratedwhenitresultedinourgroupshighestendresulttemperature.Airs
effectivenessasaninsulatorwasdemonstratedwhenitresultedintheothergroups
highestendresulttemperatureandoursecondhighestendresulttemperature.Sand,
basedonbothofourdata,wastheleasteffectiveinsulator.Thiswasdemonstratedwhen
itresultedinbothofourgroupslowestendresulttemperature.
2. Themosteffectiveinsulatingmaterials,airandshreddedpaper,hadcommon
characteristics.Theshreddedpaperhadavaluableamountofairpocketsthateffectively
keptheatinwhichairalonenaturallyhas,beingair.Alsothetemperaturedroppedat
slower,similarratesinregardstothesetwomaterialsabout1Cperminute.
3. Webelievethatlooselypackedinsulationwouldbemoreeffectivebecausethereare
moreairpocketsthatresisttheflowofheatandkeepheatfromescaping,without
absorbingit.Ifthematerialismoretightlypackedthehotairmaybesappedoutand
insulationwillbelost.
4. Ifweweretoinsulateourhouse,wewouldmostlikelyusejustplainair,sinceitseemsto
causethetemperaturetodecreaseataslowerrate.Shreddedpaperthatislooselypacked,
however,wouldalsobeaneffectivechoice.Allofourreasoningisbackedupbyand
basedoffofourdatathatdemonstrateshoweffectivethesetwomaterialsareas
insulators.
Conclusion:
Thehypothesisforthisexperimentwasthatthetheshreddedpaperwilldothebestjob
keepingintheheatbecauseoftheairpocketsbetweenthepapers.Thesandwillprobablysapall
oftheheatoutofthewater,buttheshreddedpaperhasalotofairthatwillkeeptheheatin
withoutabsorbingit.
Bothheatandcoldarerestrictedfrompassingthroughthismixofpaper
andair,mostlybythesizeoftheairspaces.Thesmallertheairspaces,thebettertheinsulation.
Inthisexperiment,thehypothesiswascorrectbecausetheshreddedpaperworkedasabetter
insulator.Inthedata,itshowsthattheshreddedpaperdroppedabout1degreefahrenheitwhile
thesanddropped2degreesfahrenheitonaverage.Butthematerialthatworksbestforinsulation
isjustplainair.Thecontrolsinthisexperimentwerethetimeaccountedforeveryminutefor15
minutesandsameenclosureeachmaterialwasin.Thefindingsinthisexperimentmayhelp
someoneinreallifewhentheyaretryingtochoosewhichtypeofmaterialismostusefulfor
insulation.
