Denotation and Connotation

Denotation is the dictionary meaning of a
word
The connotations are what it suggests
beyond what it expresses: its overtones of
meaning
It acquires these connotations from its
past history and associations and the
circumstances in which it has been used.

Denotation and Connotation

Connotation is very important in poetry, for
it is one of the means by which a poet can
concentrate or enrich meaning
It allows the poet to say more in fewer
words
A word may have more than one
denotation as well as connotation.

Denotation and Connotation

The poet often takes advantage of that
fact by using it to mean more than one
thing at the same time.
Poets seek not the most beautiful word but
the most meaningful.
