PTO Fundraiser
On January 15th, 2016 I attended a PTO fundraiser at Carroll Elementary
School. This fundraiser involved taping the principal of the school to a wall
outside. Leading up to the fundraiser students were able to purchase long pieces
of duck tape. On the day of the fundraiser the students were to walk up to the
principal and assist in taping her to the wall.
The fundraiser occurred during the school day. The students first went to a
grade level monthly awards ceremony. At this ceremony students were
recognized for making the honor roll for the month and for community service
projects they had participated in in the past month. After the awards ceremony,
the students were lead outside to the sports court where the principal was waiting
to be taped. I was with a second grade class and when we got outside the first
grade and kindergarten students were already there taping the principal. The
students were lead to sit behind the younger classmates. If students had
previously purchased a piece of tape they were able to go up to their principal
and tape her to the wall. If students did not purchase a piece of tape they sat and
watched. We remained outside for about thirty minutes before leaving the
fundraiser to go to PE.
The students really liked the idea of taping their principal to the wall. I like
that Carroll Elementary involved the students in fundraising for their school. The
assembly and fundraiser were executed well. Parents attended both and

everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. None of the teachers seemed stressed

out by the time the fundraiser and assembly took out of the day. The teachers
went with the flow of the day and stayed positive despite having to move around
tests and instruction time. I think it is important to keep in mind to remain flexible
when assemblies occur because they are definitely something I will have to
consider in the future.
Dr. Seuss Reflection
There was a lot of preparation involved in Dr. Seuss day and it definitely
paid off in the end! In the end, the Samford students created a beautiful Seuss
themed hallway filled with bright colors and fun characters. The students were
able to walk through this hall way as they went to the Dr. Seuss assembly.
The Reading and Math team played a huge role in the creation and
organization of the Dr. Seuss decorations. I helped hang student work in the hall
and helped create borders for some of the butcher paper designs. I also helped
create a wall where students could write their favorite Dr. Seuss book. After this
wall was created I wrote down my favorite Dr. Seuss book, Fox in Sox. Right
after I wrote this down a student walked by and told me that Fox in Sox was his
favorite Dr. Seuss book too. He reminded me why we were creating the
decorations in the hallway. We made the Dr. Seuss books come to life to
encourage the students to read. We wanted the students to be intrigued by our
representations of the books to make them want to read the books themselves.
The students oohed and ahhed as they walked through the hall of creations and I
think many of them were enthralled by the decorations.

Dr. Seuss day started with a book parade. Each class dressed up as
characters from one of Dr. Seusss books. I love that each class dressed up
together because I feel like it bonded them and deepened their classroom
community. Each class paraded into the cafeteria for the Dr. Seuss assembly. At
the assembly Mrs. Baker and Mrs. Stone read The Cat in the Hat. Then the
dance team performed and third grade students came to the front to read their
contest-winning essays. The assembly closed with a performance of Seussical
the Musical by Simmons Middle School.
I loved that the principals of Trace Crossing Elementary read aloud to the
students. I feel as if the students were able to clearly see their principals joy for
reading and learning through this. I also really enjoyed the performance of
Seussical the Musical by Simmons Elementary. They brought the characters
from Dr.Seusss books to life in a very engaging way through music and
costumes.
I enjoyed Dr. Seuss day because I loved its goal in exciting students about
an author and encouraging them to read. I feel as if in my own classroom one
day I can use decorations, music, costumes, and more to make books come to
life. The students at Trace Crossings really enjoyed Dr. Seuss day and I know
when the students from my class got back to their classroom they all ran to grab
Dr. Seuss books!

Space Day
I loved Space Day! It was a fun day of spending time with the fourth
graders from Trace Crossings! I think everyone in my presentation group enjoyed
the day and I think the kids enjoyed themselves as well!
I was assigned to the Major Planets room. The sophomore education
students did a wonderful job decorating our room. All of the major planets were
created on butcher paper and placed on the back walls in order. There was a sun
hanging from the middle of the classroom to showcase that the planets revolve
around the sun. Stars hung from the ceiling and the sophomores even created a
UFO hanging from the corner of the room. My presentation group loved our room
and the students who came in thought it was cool too.
As the students entered our room we played the Magic School Bus theme
song. Abby Johnson dressed up in an incredible Ms. Frizzle costume and we told
the students that we would take a trip on the magic school bus to visit all of the
major planets. After we played the theme song we showed the students a funny
video of the planets rapping about themselves. The students laughed at the
video and thought it was entertaining. We then presented a short prezi to the
students. The prezi gave the students some information on each planet in the
solar system. After this we told the students we were hiring them to be a part of
the Trace Travel Agency. We had the students draw popsicle sticks to assign
them a planet. Students worked with small groups to make a travel poster
convincing the other students that their planet would be fun to visit. We gave the
students information sheets on their planet to create their travel posters. They

had to use information such as their planet having volcanoes or their planet
having water to convince others to visit their planet. The students presented their
travel posters to their classmates. They enjoyed convincing their classmates that
their planet was the coolest and a lot of the students made creative slogans and
drawings for their poster. After the presentations the students voted on their
favorite planet. We created a graph on poster board and the students placed a
sticker next to the name of their favorite planet. Jupiter won by a large sum.
I think the students truly enjoyed themselves in the Major Planets room
and throughout the rest of their day as well. It was fun getting to talk to them and
hear about everything they had been doing in the other rooms. Im glad I got the
chance to host a room at Space Day because I enjoyed interacting with the
fourth grade students. I hope the fourth grade students who arent attending
space camp feel as if they received a fun space experience after Space Day.

Young Authors Conference

I really enjoyed the Young Authors Conference! It was a fun experience to
introduce a book to the third grade students from Trace Crossings. We tried to
make the book come to life and it was amusing watching the students react to
the events of the day.
I worked in the first Bud Not Buddy room. We started off by introducing the
book to our students by making it sound exciting. I think the students fed off our
energy and became interested in what we had to say about the book. We then
read a summary from the book and touched on a few key topics such as Buds

journey of looking for his dad and the suitcase he carried with him everywhere.
The students got the chance to think about what items they would like to carry
everywhere in a suitcase. They were also able to visualize the book by creating
scratch off drawings.
A lot of the students told me that they enjoyed spending time in the Bud
Not Buddy room. It was encouraging to hear this and to see how engaged the
students were in the activities. The suitcase activity really made the students
think about what they valued. For some students it was easy to thing of five
things they would like to bring everywhere, but for others it was difficult to think of
what they would want with them at all times. The students creativity shone
through the sketch art activity. We played jazz music and the students created
drawings based off of what they knew about the novel. They sketched
instruments, suitcases, and Bud on a journey. I think this activity was great for
introducing the students to some of the key aspects of the novel but also for
letting them be imaginative in the way they pictured the events of the book.
After the last rotation of students, we headed over to Brock Forum to hear
Rick Shelton speak on writing. Mr. Shelton was very energetic and wanted to
excite the students about writing. The students were involved in creating a
detailed paragraph describing a tree. I think the students benefited from this
activity because they saw an example of poor writing and then helped to turn this
piece of writing into a detailed and engaging paragraph.
All in all, I would consider the Young Authors Conference as a successful
day! The students got to dive into the world of four different books and attended a

writing session. I think these events left the students encouraged to read and
write. The events of the day were lively and enjoyable and I think the students
got a glimpse of how fun reading and writing can be.
