Treat children with Autism Fairly
People who are not neuro typical are assumed disabled people. One common disability of
brain is called autism spectrum disorder. Autism is a common disorder in kids. Autism Spectrum
Disorder has different symptoms in each person. Some do not communicate (non verbal); some
are high functioning (Aspergers disorder); and some do not make facial expressions. No remedy
is found for autism spectrum disorder but it can be improved by the right behavioral and
interpersonal training based on the symptoms of the disorder. Training benefits autistic students
in their behavior and learning skills in order to reach success academically. Autism has become
problematic in public schools. Teachers and staff in public schools are not trained to behave with
autistic children. This leads the autistic children to be mistreated at school. Teachers and school
staff should be trained in behavior and communication with students; they should also be aware
of the spectrum of autism levels.
It is important to get trained to bring a new home for autistic kids at school where they
feel comfortable and know that their being treated the same as neuro typical students at school.
Public schools should be responsible for providing autistic students special needs they might
have. For example, Trained teachers, staff, supplies, and etc. Statistics show that with training,
autistic students can do better at school succeed. A school had tried a method for its autistic
students at school to help them learn social skills. According to the article A peer-mediated
school intervention significantly improved the social skills and playground interactions of
children with autism spectrum disorder, Wilkes-Gillan, compares two different groups of

Fakhra2
autistic students at a school. Some students meet with a trained therapist for 20 minutes during
lunch, twice a week for 6 weeks. One group get the results after the 6 weeks training and their
social skills improved, while the other group did not significantly improve in their social skills.
The results were different based on the personality and symptoms of the disorder. Half of the
group improved their social skills for the rest of the lives and this will benefit them in the future
in the society. Also students with autism will be less in danger of mistreatment by teachers or
even their peers when their social skills are improved.
Autistic students usually attend public schools. Sometimes, they might need special help
or training in order to do some tasks, but extra help should not let others to treat them poorly.
Autism students are not able to do basics for example, how to get a bus ticket, how to hold
utensils, and etc. In the article, Apps for Communication and Video Modeling for Middle
School Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders, Kate D. Simmons has discovered some facts
about autism students such as difficulties understanding nonverbal cues (Simmons79).
Furthermore, students with autism get hurt emotionally at school because they get mistreated by
other students. students with harsh symptoms of autism do have harder time at school.
Aspergers syndrome is a kind of autism spectrum disorder. In the article, Asperger
Syndrome, defines Aspergers Syndrome, kids have severely impaired social skills, are unable
to communicate effectively with others, and have poor coordination. (Walter n.pag.) Aspergers
syndrome need more attention and control at school. Teachers need to be trained when dealing
with kids with Aspergers syndrome. Poor communication leads autistic kids to a non verbal
stage where kids do not talk or communicate with anybody.
Although some teachers would disagree getting trained on how to properly handle kids with
autism, it is important to treat autistic children the same as neuro typical students at school. For
example, a teacher is complaining about autistic children presence at school because she thinks

Fakhra3
other students have the right to learn with no distraction in classrooms. She states, I am a
general education teacher. One of my students, who has an IEP, interrupts class several times a
day. It is not uncommon for him to blurt out on- and off-topic comments, or start singing, or get
up and leave the room.I have been told that there is nothing the school can do about his behavior
because the law is absolute. The district says 80% of our special education students need to be in
general education classes 80% of the time. Is there a law that protects my general education
students? Their education is being negatively impacted on a daily basis. ( citation ) The
teacher clearly states that autistic students are distractions for her class and she cannot go against
autistic students at school but she is trying to proof that normal kids are being discriminated.
Even there are laws that protect special equators at school. Autistic students must have their
trainers in order to succeed. In the article, Special Education teachers Facebook post calls
autistic child a hot mess and Parents crazy by Rob Kunzia, shows a special-education
teacher in the Torrance Unified School District has been removed from the classroom after
infuriating parents with a Facebook post saying she was about to enter a meeting with crazy
parents to discuss an autistic students whom the teacher describes as a hot mess ....[she goes
to a meeting with the kids parents, before she goes in] "Well I have an annual IEP this morning
with lawyers and crazy parents. The student is a hot mess but so sweet! So after work I'm hitting
happy hour at least I have something to look forward too!!! (sic) Deep breath ... I'm going
in."(Kunzia n.pag.) This teacher is an example of joking about autistic kids and their parents can
lead to a huge problem for them or even get fired from their jobs. Autistic kids need to have their
trained available at all times at school in order to succeed.
Another way of helping autistic students to succeed is to provide special schools for
them. Special schools will help autistic students to keep track on their work better when they do
not get distracted by seeing their peers reactions everyday. Also, teachers at those schools are

Fakhra4
trained so the chance of hurting students feelings decreases. Going to the special school will
also help students learn easier and faster because they have the necessary supplies and staff to
improve themselves on social skills, and/or basic tasks. Sometimes autistic students stop going to
public schools because they are tired of getting bullied so they strike going to school. Although
the benefits of having separate school for autistic students are countless, there are some other
facts that impact autistic students going to the special schools. Autistic students at special
schools will feel the segregation once they graduate school. They will have a huge shock of
seeing differences, they have with other people. This matter will affect all autistic people but the
intensity would vary depending on their disabilities, whether it is social skills, basic tasks, or lack
of facial expressions. Having autistic students attend both mainstream and special classes will
help them to reach success. For example, in the article, Mainstream Vs. Special School, by
Billie Wager, the article discusses pros and cons of both classes, special schools focus on
specific disabilities and have trained professionals with expertise in teaching students with
specific learning differences.... Mainstreamed special education students spend the majority of
their day in self-contained special education classrooms and then attend one or two class periods
a day with their general education peers. (Wager n.pag) Both classes help them succeed and
achieve their goals.
To create a better life for autistic kids at school. Teachers and school staff must be trained
to know how to treat each individual autistic kid based on their autism level. Therapy treatments,
incorporating both mainstream and special classes will significantly help autistic children in
learning and social skills. This all leads to autistic students ideally overcome their fears they
might have at school.
