Essential Question: Should sports betting be legalized?
Working Thesis: Sports betting should be legalized because it would benefit the U.S. economy
by putting more money into circulation.
Refined Thesis: Sports betting should be legalized because it would help give the U.S. economy
another source of tax income, many states are already leading the charge into legalizing sports
gambling, and the integrity of the game would be helped rather than tarnished.

"Could NCAA benefit from legalizing sports gambling?" Pittsburgh Tribune-Review [Pittsburgh,
PA] 28 June 2015. Opposing Viewpoints in Context. Web. 17 Feb. 2016.
The news article describes the effect legalized sports gambling would have on the
NCAA. The NCAA stands against legalized sports gambling like many other leagues because
they are afraid it would hurt the integrity of the game. The NCAA believes that not allowing
gambling on their games is in the best interest of the players. The article also sheds light on a
study the NCAA launched on its athletes in 2012. The study found that almost half of NCAA
athletes have gambled, and nearly 25% of all athletes wagered on sporting events. The article
also says that many experts believe that legalization of sports gambling would help the NCAA
spot irregularities, such as fixing games or point shaving. This article is relevant to my topic
because it shows how legalized sports gambling would help the NCAA and its athletes, rather
than hurt the integrity of the game.

The article States Rush to Legalize Sports Betting and Expand Gambling for Revenue
describes the recent upsurge of state legislatures trying to legalize gambling in their respective
states. States like New Jersey are trying to legalize sports gambling to provide another source of
income for their tax revenues. New Jersey believes that sports wagering will generate hundreds
of millions of dollars over a 5 year period. Delaware was authorized to offer a 3-game parlay
style sports betting for NFL games only. Iowa is also leading a charge to legalize sports
gambling. California wishes to install an online gaming network, but it could potentially violate
some of the gambling agreements within the state. My reason for choosing this article is because
the article shows how different states want sports gambling to be legalized for economic reasons.

Feb. 2016
The article in the Journal of American College Health analyzed how athletes handled
gambling in their respective sports. The article explored whether or not athletes reported
gambling, and if they actually placed wagers themselves Athletes in golf and lacrosse were more
likely to report sports wagering than were other athletes. Athletes in gender-specific sports
wagered more prevalently than did athletes in unisex sports. Gambling prevalence may be
underestimated in this population because respondents athletics eligibility is at stake. This study

provides important baseline data for future cohorts of athletes. My reason for choosing this
article is because the article showed how various college athletes would respond to legalized
sports wagering.

Wann, Daniel L. "An Examination Of Sport Fans' Perceptions Of The Impact Of The
Legalization Of Sport Wagering On Their Fan Experience." UNLV Gaming Research &
Review Journal 19.2 (2015): 21-40. Business Source Premier. Web. 16 Feb. 2016
The article goes on to disprove the argument presented by those in opposition that
increased legalization of gambling would negatively alter the manner in which fans and
spectators follow, consume, and react to sporting events. The current research was designed to
examine possible changes in fandom by investigating fans perceptions of the impact of
increasing legalized sport wagering on their fan experience, interest in sport, and sport
consumption. Participants completed a questionnaire assessing demographics, economic fan
motivation, fandom, and perceptions of the impact of increased access to legalized sport
gambling. Data and analyses indicated that expected impacts were small and generally positive.
My reason for choosing this article is because the article surveys how fans would feel if
wagering on sports was legalized, and how it would affect their sports experience.

The article Sports Betting Should be Legal describes how British Soccer leagues are
partners with football pools that have many betting schemes involved in their organization.
American sports leagues such as the National Football League have only partnered with state

lotteries as a source of gambling. Betting on sports games in the United States is often not
allowed because it hurts the integrity of the game. Sports leagues have blocked betting on sports
games by convincing state legislatures of the evils that come about from gambling. The article
also says that America needs to face the truth that betting on sports games is allowed in other
countries, and that gambling has been used as a source of revenue for decades. Sports is only
just a business, a way to make profit. I felt that this article would be effective in my research
paper because it shows how national sports teams partnered with state lotteries and casinos.

Winston, Wayne L. Mathletics: How Gamblers, Managers, and Sports Enthusiasts Use
Mathematics in Baseball, Basketball, and Football. Princeton: Princeton UP, 2009. Print.
The book, Mathletics: How Gamblers, Managers, and Sports Enthusiasts Use
Mathematics in Baseball, Basketball, and Football helps show how math is used to calculate
various formulas in sports, including how to gamble on the games. The author uses
mathematical models to show readers how they can use math to help use that to get an edge on
the Vegas books and casinos to gain money and profit. Winston uses easy-to-read tables and
illustrations to illuminate the techniques and ideas he presents, and all the necessary math
concepts such as arithmetic, basic statistics, and probability. This article is relevant to my topic
because it shows how gamblers use mathematics and statistics to get a competitive advantage
when wagering on sports games.
